Apparently there isn't much blankets in size twin xl. Do you guys actually buy twin xl blankets/comforter/etc.? If not, what sizes do you buy or bring from your home to college? Would those sizes be a good fit for the mattress?

Doesn't hurt to use something slightly too big or too small. Twin XL is only 5" longer than standard Twin, so a regular Twin comforter will work nicely.

Though, if you're like me and aesthetics doesn't matter, just get whatever costs the least in the store. At home, I use a a combination of a Queen-sized sheet and a King-sized comforter (folded over) on a regular Twin-sized bed.

I think they only thing that really has to be twin XL is your fitted sheet, since that's the one that actually has to fit around the mattress. That and a mattress pad if you've got one. Otherwise, unless you're really tall, I think you'll be just fine with regular twin blankets and anything else you use to cover yourself.

i bought a full size comforter and a reg sized blanket. i like to cuddle up with my covers in the night so i think it will work out fine

I have twin XL sheets and I use a full comforter. More blanket for snuggling :)

is a mattress pad really useful?

I use a mattress pad and I think it is amazing. It's not like dorm room mattresses are comfortable to begin with so any little bit helps. You can buy twin mattress pads at Walmart for around $10 - $15.

Colleges just tell you that there's not much available in Twin XL to scam you into buying their crappy overpriced sheets. You can find a bunch of stuff available in Twin XL at Bed Bath and Beyond, Linens n Things, etc and probably even at places like Walmart, Target, etc (if not always, then definitely during back to school sales in areas near a college). It's not like stores are completely oblivious to the fact that most dorms in the country uses beds that are twinXL.

also it would be smart to keep an eye out at certain stores like target, sears, ect AFTER school has been in session for a month or during the winter. they usually put all of the college stuff on sale

Full is really too wide for dorm beds. Unless you like youre blanket to skirt the ground, I'd go with a Twin XL.

I have a full/queen size down comforter that I love and use it on the twin bed. It just gets piled on the bed and works great. Very comfortable. My roommate even asked why my bed looked more comfortable then hers :)

thanks for the replies! you guys made me feel comfortable about deciding to bring my full comforter with me since i don't wanna spend even more money on unnecessary (a relative term) items.
