It’s 12:45 and all I want to do is go to sleep. BLIPS, why have you forsaken me?

teriyarki

my daughter got in Promys, and she is still waiting for blips. she doesn’t know which one to pick if she got accepted to blips, because she like math and sciences.
any advice will be appreciated.

She’s still waiting? The last day for offers was yesterday

David, I thought we had established that that was false.

Edit: Just checked BLIPS website, deadline for offers has been extended to midnight of June 7.

Oops, just kidding. Congrats to your d on getting into Promys friednoodles101. If she’s willing to go out to Boston, then go for it

Reply to earlier post by Friednoodles:

BLIPS is primarily conducting research and doing practical work for a national laboratory. It is good for hands-on research experience, but doesn’t offer an opportunity to submit a project to a competition such as Intel STS or Siemens. Other programs such as Garcia MRSEC at Stony Brook, and Simons (also at Stony Brook) are more competition-oriented. If you live in California, then I would say BLIPS is more convenient in terms of commuting. Plus, your daughter can simultaneously take online courses such as from Johns Hopkins or EPGY everyday after returning (and on weekends), after completing any tasks from BLIPS.

For PROMYS (as well as for Ross and other Math programs), more critical thinking and problem-solving is stressed, according to a friend of mine who attended last summer. It is a great experience for those who enjoy math contests and meeting others similarly interested in tackling difficult problems. The downside is that you don’t do any research. Overall, I am more interested in doing research, so I didn’t apply to any Math programs this summer.

^ Also, another advantage of BLIPS over PROMYS:

BLIPS gives its interns a stipend of $2000, while PROMYS costs almost $3000.

The deadline for last-day offers has been extended to June 7, 2011 so don’t give up hope yet everyone!

BLIPS is terrible. Why do they keep applicants in a limbo for so many months? All other summer programs reach a decision sometime in early April.

I’m so glad that I got into SIMR otherwise I would be really stressed out about BLIPS.

Same position with SIMR and BLIPS. I am going to decline BLIPS, and there may be other people doing the same, so there’s still hope.

nyway12 have you joined the SIMR 2011 facebook group yet? Check it out.

^Yep, I was one of the earlier people to join :)

Teriyark,

Thank so much for the information about blips and promys, plus the advice how to get both research and math learning experiences for the summer. My daughter clearly knows what to do now. You really help.

There’s also a group for the BLIPS interns on facebook:

Haha a rivalry between SIMR and BLIPS is brewing.

That’s silly. I’d be happy with either.

Anyone get any email updates yet?

nope…still nothing. is it the 8th or 7th thats the deadline? the email said the 8th, but the website says the 7th…

so have anyone gotten anything yet?

Friend of mine got in yesterday.
