Wtp 2011

I started looking into WTP for the upcoming summer and it sounds really, really amazing but I am worried that I will not get in. I also took AP Computer Science and am unsure of whether or not that will automatically disqualify me. I am also not entirely sure of what criteria they look at to determine whether or not someone is accepted but I figured that it's still worth applying? Does anyone who went to WTP have any advice for the application process? Is anyone else on here also applying for 2011?

I am! I’m applying with a preference for ME, though. I’m really excited - I hope I get in!
I wonder why there are so few people on here applying? In previous years, the threads were busy. Maybe more people will show up soon.

Hi! I’m thinking of applying this year. I don’t have a preference yet as to which program I want to be in. I read about both programs, but I don’t know which one would suit me better. Any suggestions? Especially from former WTP people?

Swirls: Why not just put no preference? I’m guessing thatcboth will be just as good!

haha sounds good! i think i’ll do that.

btw…if we combine our names, it’d be like cinnamon swirls!

Here’s what I’m wondering: If I take the January SAT, could I submit those scores after the deadline? My PSAT was weak on math (although my PLAN was strong on math and science), but that was because I made some stupid mistakes that I shouldn’t have made. The PSAT wasn’t an accurate representation of my math skill. Should I just not submit the PSAT? Should I submit it and hope they realize that it was a fluke based on my PLAN scores? Should I try to submit SAT scores when I take it? What do you think?

Swirls: It would be! That’s awesome!

Sorry for the triple post, but I just want to add to my first post: I got a 65 on math on the PSAT (>.<), but 30 math and 32 science on the PLAN.

Hmmm. I’m not sure. Maybe call them and ask them about it. If you do, please tell me what they say! I’m planning to take the January SAT as well, and if I get a better score than on my PSAT, then I definitely would rather send the SAT score in.

I think I’ll email about them. They said that they prefer email contact, so I’ll try that.
Have you done any of the essays yet?

Oh, wait. I just read the FAQs and it says that they’ll accept SAT scores if they are received before March. Not sure if I’m going to take it though - seems like it might be just a waste of money to take it before I’m ready.

good luck you guys! it’s completely worth it.

wellthatsokay, did you go? can you tell us a little bit about it? what did you think about it? how was the social life? any advice…stuff like that. thanks!

haha, i haven’t started the application yet, so no essays done yet…i’ll get to it soon

yup, i did eecs last year :). it was completely amazing. there was a lot of work, but most of it’s group/partner stuff so even that’s fun. and there’s tons of help available in the evenings on weekends. everyone else there was incredible, and we had a lot of fun walking around boston and doing tourist-y things. the staff also plan a lot of weekend trips (beach, museums, etc.) that are really cool.

Eek! Applications are due in two days! How’s everyone doing? I still have two essays to write and two to edit.

sooo i have finals this week and next week…i haven’t started the essays. i’m giving up on this…haha. i thought about just writing all my essays like on saturday but i don’t think it’s worth it. they won’t be that great and i probably won’t get in so why waste precious time that i could use for studying for finals next week. and there are some other summer programs that i’m interested in…so it’s not the end of the world for me. haha well good luck, cinnamoon!!!

Swirlz, good news! They moved the date to Tuesday because of MLK day! Maybe you can still do it?

Hi everyone!

I went to WTP last summer and had an amazing experience! It definitely solidified my passion for engineering so much that I applied EA to MIT and recently got accepted. I’ll tell you about my experience and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

*About already taking AP CS - I did the EECS portion of the curriculum, and I think in our CS class we covered what is covered in AP CS. We learned how to program in Python for 3 weeks, so if you already have a good foundation in CS, I think you would feel bored. Maybe you would be better suited for the ME track. I think the WTP really is looking for girls with little to no experience so that they can introduce you to these topics

My experience:

*socially - All of the other girls in the EECS side of the program that I met were super nice. Nobody was competitive, and they always encouraged group work. After classes, we would go back to the dorms, sit in the lounge and work in groups on our homework and projects. There were 4 major projects throughout the program, which helped me to get to know a lot of the other girls. On weekends, we took trips through cambridge and boston which were also good bonding experiences. We toured historical sites in boston, went to revere beach one weekend, went into chinatown and had dimsum, went into cambridge for yummy froyo and visited harvard. The RAs really provided a great social experience for us with all of their planned activities. There would be movie nights, a karaoke night (we had some pretty good singers there), and we celebrated people’s birthdays with birthday parties in the lounges. Basically, even though there was an intense workload, we still found time to have lots and lots of fun, and I made friends that I will have for the rest of my life.

*academically - Be prepared to work!! I’m not going to scare you in any way because I thoroughly enjoyed everyday of my experience there, but you have to go in with the attitude that you are going to work hard. The homework was collected every day, but there were residential tutors in the dorms who were always available for help. The projects were super fun and interesting! WTP is well worth attending if you like math and science and want to discover if you like engineering. Also, attending classes in MIT classrooms and getting to explore the campus and learning how to build a motor with an MIT professor made the program really cool

If you have any questions about the program, I’d love to answer them

ahh just strayed across this
i sent in my application 15 or so minutes ago…
i hope they aren’t uber nit-picky about the essay. A 300 word limit messed me up a bit because I wanted to ramble  but I hope it is all right
best of luck to all of us!

I just have to do a final edit on my essays, and then I’ll submit my app. So excited! I don’t know if I can wait until April.
