Could anybody explain why these answers are right?

(the parts in parenthesis are wrong)

The department of transportation has introduced pictorial traffic signs because drivers can react to (this) more quickly than to verbal ones.

She claimed that the “representational” actor (is having to imitate) a character’s behavior, whereas the “presentational” actor attempts to reveal human behavior through self-understanding.

Far (away from) having been a diehard conservative, Hoover was, some scholars now contend, the leading progressive of his day.

thanks!

"This" is incorrect because it is singular but it refers to "traffic signs," wich is plural.

"Is having to imitate" should be changed to "has to imitate." The "is having to imitate" just sounds weird, and it doesn't follow the form of the next verb, "attempts."

"Away from" is incorrect because the "away" part only can refer to physical distances. It is describing a characteristic of Hoover, which is not a physical distance. It should be changed to "far from."
