My son will be going into his third year of vet school and said he needs some new board games. He likes all sorts of games so let me hear what you or your older kids like!
It probably seems unoriginal - but we are old school.
We most commonly play Sorry - I’m sure a kids game but we have a lot of fun knocking each other off the board. But also Clue, Scrabble and Rumikub.
Try cooperative games like Pandemic, and Forbidden Island. Always fun when your group is working together (rather than against each other) to “win.”
Hanabi is a clever and somewhat addicting card game that is also cooperative.
I can’t help with complicated strategy games… but a new one we play with our 20s and 30s kids is Just One - fast moving, easy, fun
Just One Party Game (White Box) | Cooperative Board Game for Adults and Kids | Fun Games for Family Game Night | Ages 8 and up | 3-7 Players | Average Playtime 20 Minutes | Made by Repos Production https://a.co/d/ioQ1PS2
When we get together, we like to play Scrabble, guess who came out with the biggest score, maybe I cheat better, haha.
Mine plays Gloomhaven with her friends. Very involved and complicated but she loves it.

We usually have a board game thread each holiday season. Here’s one:
We play a lot of board games. Right now Azul is one we play frequently.
Go may be of interest.
@Creekland is a board game expert.
Another vote for Azul; it’s a super fun game, easy to play, and aesthetically pleasing.
We like Photosynthesis. It’s a game about growing trees and even though that might sound boring, it’s a great game.
Are you looking for games for a specific number of players? Here are the ones we’ve been pulling out most in the last year or so:
Bohnanza–a card game that is quick to pick up, and you can be as kind or as devilish to each other as you’d like
Dominion–card building game (your hand changes as you buy cards)
7 Wonders–this has a slightly longer learning curve, but it’s not bad, and is eminently repeatable
Ticket to Ride Europe–an older game, but fun. Build routes across Europe according to the cards in your hand
Wingspan–about birds, but so pretty and has a good, balanced game dynamic
Love Azul, Carcassone, and Sorry.
My son is a big fan of Bang! And Settlers of Catan.
For card game, Hand and Foot is getting a lot of play lately.
Lastly, hard to beat Farkle and Yahtzee for dice games.
we like Photosynthesis too! Even though we don’t understand the last round, but it’s beautiful and fun.
Machi Koro is a table based card game, very different and easy to learn, nicely balanced luck/strategy
Tokaido is a beautifully made, really unusual sort of journey-and-skill game we liked. Played it with family and everyone enjoyed it.
For cards, we like Five Crowns which is a rummy style game for up to 7 players (and can add another deck to play with more).
I like Bananagrams. It’s played with small lettered tiles on a table and all the pieces come in a banana! It’s also very easy to travel with.
We enjoy Codenames and Dixit!
We recently played Codenames for the first time with a group of friends and it was surprisingly fun.
