Book buying service

Can anyone currently at NYU comment on the service the University has where they basically figure out what textbooks you are going to need (based on the info you provide as far as what courses you are taking) and then send you the textbooks through the mail?

It sounds easy and convenient, but my concern (as a parent who is going to be paying huge tuition and room and board and misc. expenses for the next four years!) is that it will be more expensive than would tracking down the textbooks used, etc.

you are correct, it will be more expensive, but more convenient. there are plenty of sites that sell used books which you can find with a simple google search (abebooks.com comes to mind) that will have the books for much cheaper. it could be a hassle to search for all your books like this however, but i've found that even ordering all your books from amazon comes out to be much cheaper. i have found that amazon sells the new books usually for a little cheaper than nyu, and there are also plenty of retailers on amazon that sell used books. so the simple answer is yeah, the books can be bought for much cheaper than what nyu sells them for.

Thanks! I figured as much. My kid will be studying musical theater through Tisch, so I am doubting she will have many books at all, though she has to take a writing course and one Theatre Studies course, and the drama dept assigned the kids two books to read over the summer, which she already owned. Mitssu, does NYU have a buy back program for texts??

yes but no one will recommend it. nyu will buy back textbooks for about 10% of their value. sometimes more of they are low in stock but usually less since they will have enough in stock. most students sell/trade their textbooks to the fellow classmates directly.

I love how NYU Bookstore offered me $6 for my two Theatre History books combined, which cost $40 combined. And they're in perfect condition too. Love my life haha.

NOCCA, I've got one better--they told me they weren't buying back my $90 film book this year. Ridiculous!

And I would highly recommend getting books from amazon.com or textbooks.com. NYU has ridiculous prices. Also, getting the books early enough should be no problem since you seem to already be on the right track. Plus, even if you cannot track a book down, a lot of the time you do not need it right when classes start or you end up using it much later on in the year. Teachers also put copies of the book on reserve at the library so that students can freely use them for small periods of time, which is a big help. So I would definitely say spend more time finding a deal; it's well worth it!
