So i can only use my bright futures money at the UF bookstore and the florida bookstore right? but arent the prices really the same?

Dont get the question :/

I don't know about the other bookstores in town, but at TIS Bookstore on SW 13th & University (near the Kangaroo), they have a deferment program where they charge your credit/debit card on September 15 (All of your financial aid should be in by then.. otherwise you have to notify them it will be delayed). I think Orange and Blue Textbooks has a deferment program as well..

My son had to buy one of his courses' books at Goerring's bookstore, located behind the Swamp restaurant. His instructor didn't stock the book in any other bookstore, not even the Reitz bookstore. When I asked them about the Bright Futures book money, they handed me a form to fill out, and said that it would be a few weeks before our credit card would be credited back for the amount.

I didn't bother doing it, because I knew that his other courses would quickly eat up the $300 Bright Futures book allowance, and it's so much easier to use it at the Reitz bookstore. By the way, someone on this board mentioned that the Bright Futures book allowance is $500 now. And a clerk at the Reitz bookstore told my son on Monday that it was $500, too. So I called the bookstore myself on Tuesday, and they told me that the book allowance is still just $300, but the Bright Futures students also get a $200 line of credit if the $300 isn't enough. They have to pay back the additional $200.

One course's books were $131.00. Another course was $162.00 (we paid cash at Goerring's). The books for his other courses have not come in yet, but at this rate, the rest of his BF book money ($169.00) will cover only one more course, and he'll have to pay cash for the rest. I'm not complaining. Bright Futures is still a big help, but it's not a free ride. Especially when two soft-covered books cost $162.00. Good grief.

g8tormom....Did your son buy any used books???.. my son did, and they were in great shape.... and there isn't any writing or underlining in any of them. So far he has not exceeded his 300.00 ....but he still has to get his books for one other class. They were out of it till today, and I have not talked with him yet to find out if he got it.
By the way I like your user name!!! :)

You can also try buying books online through amazon.com, half.com, etc. I bought a book for $30 that the bookstore sold for $70(For some reason the professor said it will run in the one hundreds). I also got another book for $12 that runs around $50(I believe).

You're not limited to the UF bookstore or any bookstore near campus.

abebooks.com is really great. i just found my calc textbook there for about a third of the price, and it's still new.

Question, does brightfutures credit your bank account? how does the textbook money work, exactly?

Thank you, CShore. So far, all of his books have been soft-covered, and you can't buy them used. The books for one of his courses haven't come in yet, and on his pre-order at the UF bookstore for that course, he indicated that he wanted used books. I know what you mean though, the used books are a great deal. Last year, my son was dual-enrolled for six credits at the local community college, and he had perfectly good used textbooks. With dual enrollment in high school, you don't have to pay for your books at all, and tuition is free. Now that's a real deal!

actually, bright futures did increase your book allowance to 500.. and besides, why would the uf bookstore allow students to spend up to $500 and have them under the impression that the entire amt is covered by bright futures when in reality some of it is a loan?
it really is 500

I was told that it is still $300, but they let you charge up to $500 and then you are billed for the difference.

Depends on how much aid (Bright Futures, grants, NMS, etc.) you are getting and how many credits you are registered for. Some students will be allowed 500 and others 300.

Yep it is true... my son just had 500.00 deposited to his checking account

CShore, did your son receive other scholarship book money, other than Bright Futures? Or was the $500 strictly from Bright Futures? How many credits is he taking this semester?

Gtrmom... he has 12 hrs and the 500.00 was strictly Bright Futures .

The deposit into S's checking account is two hundred plus (with cents) and not a nice round figure. He is taking more than 12 credits and is receiving the full BF. His ISIS account states the scholarship amount but no breakdown. And he has bought books under deferred payment just under $300/=. Now I'm wondering whether that deposit of two hundred plus is meant for the deferred payment for books or is it nett of that?

My D has the full BF, Florida prepaid and is taking 13 credits this semester. On Sept. 5th, $1231.78 was credited to her student checking account at Wachovia via EFT from UF financial aid dept. She spent about $430 on books at the bookstore...sounds about right to me.
