Bored, I guess I'll "chance" you if you chance me...

Just a day ago you were telling me I stood a chance. Thanks Pinker.

congrats Knight!

Thanks Ashy!

good stuff tdk

jdecker now you just got me very worried. But ok here’s the deal lets get some facts straight. Global studies IS NOT Business economics no stressing at least for this year. If we’re talking about too many courses in one area then i could be totally screwed although I will have completed 7 of their courses and it says to finish 6. djecker remember prereqs are RECOMMENDED for 2009 REQUIRED for 2010. yes your TAP will help you and it could cost me a spot because of my stupid counselor recommendation. I don’t know what to tell you but I am keeping my fingers crossed in that this will be the last ok year, starting next year I believe this major could be suicide like bus econ. wouldn’t it had been nice to apply in 2007 that year it was a piece of cake almost everyone got in, but we’ll see what happens. I am scared, but hopeful we get in. as far as job prospects I am going to enter to some business aspect and mix it up with all the disciplines I will learn if I get in. anyways good luck and remember what I said, I think UCLA won’t get mad at you, and I bet there’s lots of of people in your situation. we also got to remember and this is a case I am in, there’s LOTS of people who at first intended to enter bus econ or econ or some other major, and started taking those prereqs but still have a competitive GPA. The thing with me is that I did global studies prereqs and I did business as well except for the calculus sequences. I would be very mad if UCLA rejected me if they saw that on paper I look business related although the essays state my full interest and passion for global studies. what do you think now?

Oh and one more thing, as far as finishing prereqs in the spring are concerned let’s give the example of bus econ. I ve known many people who don’t finish their calc 2 class by the spring before they transfer and they still get in, TAP or no TAP. so we don’t have to finish the prereqs by fall. If they focused on that, then we can do a demand on them since it says FINISH ALL PREREQ COURSES THE SPRING TERM BEFORE TRANSFERRING" it does not say the Fall when applications are due. and although UCLA likes to be picky with making our global studies major competitive, the courses are RECOMMENDED I honestly do not believe a person will be penalized as long as the essays are good, and strong GPA like we have. Let’s remain positive and see what happens.

nikijon to your post wow you actually might be right about this. here’s the thing, can someone over an average admit GPA get rejected? if he/or she has strong essays, and higher admit GPA plus IGECT finished and prereqs by this SPRING? I once heard a counselor say that if you have over the minimum GPA and they like your application that your in is this true? For instance, give me a mathematical example. ok the people who applied for my intended major had a 3.37 average so this means people between 3.1 and 3.4 or 3.5 or what do they mean? Also, for the average GPA of people who got amitted it was 3.5 to 4.0? Let me know what you think. We have spoken about this before on an e-mail message you giving me lots of motivation hope this sparks some more understanding on how this all works. take care

let’s stick to the ‘CHANCE ME’s’ and leave the side conversation/essays to pm’s

Statements about being over minimum GPAs and average major GPAs are myths unless proven otherwise. The average applicant major of 3.37 is exactly what it is, an average. Add up the GPAs of all 152 applicants and divide that number by 152, the average number was 3.37. The same process was used for average admit GPA, add the GPAs of those 51 accepted and divide by 51. Since we cannot see individual data, it’s hard to say formulate conclusions like “Most of the admits are between 3.5-4.0”. For all you know, you could have had like 30+ 4.0s scattered with some mid 3.0s and even low 3.0s which could still possibly give you that 3.72 admit GPA.

Your GPA is high enough cheeser, all you can do is wait and not over think this whole process.

Also, whoever said that if you miss 1 pre-req for UCLA L&S majors is an automatic DQ is wrong. Look at past acceptance threads on CC, there have been numerous cases of people missing 1 or more Pre-Reqs still being accepted. Just because people for the most impacted majors ( Biz. Econ ) might get rejected by missing a Pre-Req doesn’t mean the same standards hold true for other majors.

Everyone, you have a 10/10 chance at the school you want! Wait, no I take it back, 0/10 chance. No, 10/10… 3/10? 6/10? Over 9000 out of 10?

I’m I the only one who finds these “chance me” threads asinine? Peers evaluating peers who no concrete knowledge of the actual admissions process. All we really know is that Cal/UCLA have holistic admissions policies, and the statistics of previous admits posted on StatFinder/UCLA Admitted profile.

Instead of boosting egos or putting down people, how about we just offer them a percentage that is based off past GPA averages in relation to their major.

nijikon, most would take false hope and subsequent disappointment over no hope and self-torment.

**** that, I’ll be in my self loathing corner all day long sir.

I guess the point I was trying to make was… We have StatFinder/UCLA Admitted profile to look up statistics. Why not give someone a relevant “chance me” by using those tools? Instead of saying x/10, we can say “x% of people with your GPA in that major were accepted last year”.

this is what I like about nijikon. you know how to explain very well. Yeah I was told that people who miss prereqs get automatically rejected. I am now clarified on all this. Now I have another question: In your opinion, why do some people get rejected with good GPA’S in the past? Do you think sometimes it’s luck? or it’s all fair and squared?

Thanks for the feedback cheeser.

Disclaimer: This is just an example. I do not have any real knowledge of UCLA/Cal admissions process. This is solely my opinion on how the process MIGHT work.

Cheeser, I do not really know why people with high GPAs get rejected. There can be many reasons. Since the whole process for UCLA/Cal is holistic; meeting objective x, y, and z criterion may not result in automatic acceptance. This Q/A is taken from the Haas undergrad. site and I think it provides a solid model on how their evaluation MIGHT work:

Question: How does the Admission Committee evaluate applications?
Answer: The application is broken down as follows: 50% Grades & Coursework, 35% Essays and 15% Resume/extra-curricular activities.

If GPA/Coursework is only 50%, lack of ECs / Weak essay can even take a 4.0 student with all pre-reqs/breadth out of the contention. I hope this sheds some light on your GPA question.

thanks for the feedback, sakurax!! I hope you are right

nikijon this is only from hass? or cal in general? You don’t have any ucla site? Now I got a very interesting question, in your opinion what makes a weak essay? Is it like a luck process that if they like your essay your cool or is it that they focus on the grammar aspects and the content? If we’re in colege why would someone write a weak essay in the first place? specially knowing it’s like an autobiography about ourselves and like the proctor told me at my CC he said to write it in the most refreshing manner as possible and not try to be too exagerrating. Is there such thing as weak extracurricular activities as well? Now, ok I don’t know if you’ve heard of the AGS Alpha Gamma Sigma club which is very popular at most schools and if you complete it, the CC gives you a transcript notation does UCLA you think get mad that I didn’t finish the club? Do they just look at what I did or do they actually start investigating everything? supposedly, i ve heard that anyone from that club has a big shot I dont know if you ve heard it anywhere but since I didn’t even finish it, I dont know if they will get mad. what about like I previously told you a few weeks back, I did most of them from high school and they were good, and less in CC how do the admission people react? oright thanks for your help

" …most would take false hope and subsequent disappointment over no hope and self-torment."

grey, very well put

I am soo a bit ch of false hope

Hey, for all of you guys chancing and whatnot…how far along are you in completing your IGETC/pre-req requirements? I know it differs from college to college, and I know UCB likes you to complete ALL pre-reqs and IGETC. Is that the bare minimum? Do they also look at the extra classes you took? What are the chances of getting in somewhere with just minimum requirements barely completed?

no one can make any predictions on what courses you have taken, unless you are missing and IGETC requirement or a pre req that is offered at your school.

taking the bear minimum only (IGETC/GE and pre reqs) will not affect your admission decision, what will is how you did in the courses and the grade trends on your transcript

I didn’t have like…2 Pre-Reqs for UCSD and they WERE offered at my CCC and I was admitted. There really is no way of knowing…grr…

i’m done with IGETC and pre-reqs by the end of this semester.
