Essays:

Supplement - 9/10 I picked the “Many human beings throughout history have found inspiration and joy in literature and works of art. Is there a book, play, poem, movie, painting, music selection, or photograph that has been especially meaningful to you?” prompt and wrote about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton. I wrote about how Alexander, an immigrant, experienced so many awful things early in his life, yet through hard work and determination he was able to inspire those around him to send him to the U.S to get an education. He caught the attention of GW, created a financial system despite the resistance of so many around him, etc, all through his writing.

Common App - 10/10 I chose the “Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.” prompt and wrote a very personal experience I had that completely changed me. I had to turn it into my senior English teacher for a grade (she didn’t like me very much in the beginning) and even she said that she was moved by my words.
Teacher Recommendation: 10/10 for both. I have a great relationship with my APUSH and AP Lang teachers, I TA for both of them now and they let me read their recommendations and I kind of teared up a little.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 Didn’t read, but she’s known me personally for a while.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

Country (if international applicant): U.S
School Type: Large Public School
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Mexican)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <15,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, First Generation College

Reflection:
I know I have low test scores, but I really think my essays, volunteer work, recommendations, and the fact that I’m Hispanic helped me out a lot. I like Boston and I’m very grateful for the acceptance, however, I don’t think I will be attending in 2020. Nothing is set in stone until I get my financial aid package, but I hope the best for everyone else!

Essays: I was the only one who read any of my essays. I’m a good writer, but I really had trouble coming up with the Common App essay. It was well written, but I didn’t think the subject-matter was that strong. I found my BC essay to be really good, well written and a perfect response to the prompt. Pretty unique. 9/10
Teacher Recommendation: Wasn’t allowed to read any of them
Counselor Rec: Again, not allowed to read. I would assume that it was relatively strong in comparison to the recs written for other students. She seemed to like me, and was the moderator of a club that I was helping to lead.

Other: Jesuit high school, kind of a feeder for BC. Was a bit skeptical about this though, because they rejected a lot more kids from our school last year than they ever had before.

I’m not surprised that I got in, but at the same time, looking at some other kids who were rejected/waitlisted makes me question what in the world makes one kid attractive to admissions while another isn’t.

Volunteer/Community service: School National Honors Society got me about 100 hours cumulatively
Summer Activities: boatload of classes at the community college
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App- Honestly I have no idea, I’ll guess 8/10; it’s good not great, pretty well written IMO; I wrote about how my transition from childhood to adulthood happened when I moved

Teacher Rec #1: 8-Sophomore English teacher, probably well written
Teacher Rec #2: 9-Business professor from over summer who wrote a very professional letter; not super unique but a cool perspective to get
Counselor Rec: 8-I actually know who she is and she’s good at her job

Applied for Financial Aid?: Ohhhhh yeahhhhh
Intended Major: Economics
State: CA
School Type: Small charter middle college high school school, technically public; located on the community college campus, which is where the campus is located
Ethnicity: 100% White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 75kish
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Middle college high school is kinda but not really; didn’t seem to work as a hook for students in the past

Reflection: Considering the exact same application minus the supplemental got me into Northeastern Honors with a 20k/yr merit scholarship, I have to imagine that the risk I took on my supplemental did not pay off. I wrote about my experience with kids on the community college campus who dreamed of university and couldn’t afford it and connected it with BC offering an affordable education. Also proposed the solution of more education on loans rather than more money straight up. I should have done a better job of making it seem like BC was unique.

Strengths: ACT, business-related ECs, LORs, Common App essay kinda, strength of schedule
Weaknesses: No working, little volunteering, white middle class male
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Supplemental, got more Bs in my first semester (albeit no Cs)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Temple, Northeastern, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, UCSD

Decision: Waitlisted

Overall pretty sad. Probably couldn’t afford it anyways but still. And considering all the very qualified applicants who got waitlisted, I doubt I’ll get in at all soo
