I got deferred from Boston College, my 2nd choice school, and my application has been pushed back to regular admission. I am 3rd in my class, have an unweighted GPA of 3.95, an ACT supercore of 33 and I am really involved in my community. I think that my application is really good, I have great grades and a lot of leadership experience. The only thing I think could be hurting my application is my essay, which isn't bad but also isn't amazing. That being said though, I can't change that and I was happy with my supplement. Can people actually get into schools if they're deferred? I really want to get into Boston Colleged, but is it even possible? I know it's harder to get into for regular admission. What are my chances of getting accepted? What can I do to help my chances? I could send in 2 subject tests I took in December, I got a 710 in lit and a 720 in US history, but is it worth it? Thanks

I got deferred as well. I think you should be fine in the regular pool with a great UW GPA like you have.

When you get deferred, you should let the university know about your recent academic/social achievements. Send them a letter a week later, but dont wait too much!

I think its because they feel that your using BC as a backup school and have minimal interest in attending. Michigan also deferred high stat OOS students this EA class

but how would they know that BC is my backup? I’ve visited and attended a tour/info session so I’ve showed interest in attending

Deferred EA! In regards to improving my application for RD, can I not update any part of my Common App or Writing Supplement? It seems like the the only options are sending in updated test scores, a letter of interest, or a list of extra accomplishments since the deferral.

Since then I have heavily revamped my Common App essay, am I stuck with my first version from EA?

@student515 I would send those subject tests, they are strong and certainly can’t hurt! And any other meaningful (but not redundant with app) supplemental info can’t hurt either. Good luck sounds like you have a good chance based on your stats!

@student515 I don’t mean to scare you, but I was accepted Early Action to BC. I then went to a reception for accepted students from my area with admissions officers in attendance, and i spoke to several of them. They all mentioned “how great of a writer I must be if I was accepted” so they clearly put a lot of emphasis on the strength of your writing samples, so that is most likely the reason you were deferred. Also they recieved double the amount of EA applicants than they ever have, so they were only able to accept half of the percentage that they normally would, so I would not be too discourged, but definitely have a strong backup option.
UPDATE: I got in!!
CONGRATS!!!
Congratulations!
