I thought most people from ED and EDII got rejected. I also did EDII, sent a LOCI, and got the same thing. BU was a pretty big reach and I know people with better stats who got flat out rejected. I think this shows they like demonstrated interest and are holistic, which I like.
does anyone know if merit came out with the letters? or when financial aid comes out?
at least for me, both merit scholarship and financial aid did come with my letter
It’s not her fault. You have to know the way this game Is played - it’s never about the kid or their stats. Yield from previous year matters more than anyone realizes and often the high stats kids get waitlisted because it looks like they are using the school for a second choice. As a very watered down example of how schools fill their holes first—You can have all the best scores in the world but if they have a first chair violinist graduating and the kid in line next to you plays the violin, they are getting in even without your SAT score. It’s like that for every discipline.
You can appeal, you can have your superintendent appeal— but also you need to k
Ok it’s not at all about the kid. American college admissions is a terrible chess match and most kids have no idea how it works.
Waste of time and effort.
The opposite is true at many Canadian universities. At McGill admission is based solely on grades and for American applicants SAT/ACT scores. They publish minimum stats for each program, If your GPA and grades in specified courses and test scores are above the minima then you are accepted. If right at the minima then it is a guessing game. You can have a 4.0 UW GPA but if your SAT score is below say 1420 for their business school then you are denied. For science you may have a 3.8 GPA but if you got a B+ in English you are denied. There is no perfect system of admission.
Your insight is helpful. I have gotten a real education over the past six months and hopefully I can put it to use for my son who is only a freshman. You start out thinking that hard work and success in high school means a straight shot to a top university when in fact it doesn’t. And you can’t help but feel disappointed for the kids (and families!) who made these efforts and then not be met with the reward they were seeking. But as I said we have a great school with UNC-CH…she just has some wanderlust is all.
hows the biology program at BU?
Decision: Waitlisted
GPA: 4.0 UW/4.48 W
ACT/SAT: 1480
Class Rank: 2/190 something
Major: Computer Science (I also identify as female)
11 APs, 3 Scores (all 5s), no varsity sports but stacked ecs with lots of leadership + internship
Not gonna lie, pretty sad about this. I mean waitlist isn’t the worst thing in the world, but I really liked BU and thought I had a shot. I got waitlisted at BC too. I was accepted to Villanova and Georgetown (my front runner currently) so I’m not stuck, but I liked Boston and this one stings a little. Waiting to hear back from NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and the University of Glasgow.
Same here for my d and her friend as well. Accepted for fall 2022 (transfer).
After a string of waitlists (Northeastern, Michigan, GIT), finally great news for my son:
Accepted into College of Engineering and Kilachand with $25k/y NMF scholarship
4.0/4.4
36 ACT
BU is still one of the priciest options right now (and grateful to have options), but today we’ll just celebrate.
My daughter also applied to NEU, Chapel Hill (OOS) and BU. She was accepted at NEU in the Honors Program, accepted to Chapel Hill (did not apply to honors), and WAITLISTED at BU. She has friends from her high school with lower stats who got into BU. I agree that this is all crazy and feels quite random. She’s #1 in her class of nearly 300, many APs/ 3 college courses/ all others Honors, 1520 SAT (one sitting), 98 UW GPA. Public school. Seems like yield protection is in play. The problem is that so many kids are applying to the same schools. I think they are admitting students who are most likely to attend based on all of the sophisticated data they have from previous years.
Which is better: Waitlist or Guaranteed Transfer. I feel guaranteed transfer is safer but if you really want BU (like I do) you have a better chance of getting in for Fall 2021.
Does anyone know how work-study works here? If I am only offered $4,000, how many hours would I work? (Rough estimate/average. I know it differs.)
Idk but if they pay minimum wage that is $15.00/hr in MA.
**** update: my apologies Minimum wage in MASS is $13.50 w gradual increase to $15.00 by Jan 2023 ****
Depends on the school/major applied to within BU. Bio medical engineering, computer science, business … at BU can be a reach for anyone no matter how great the stats, during Regular decision.
which school is harder to get into CGS or CAS?
CAS if harder.
I know that some colleges limit the number of AP credits that students can exchange (in total, or within a specific concentration requirement). For example, both AP psychology and AP environmental science carry the BU Hub Unit “SO I”
At BU, can both be exchanged for credit at the same time?
Agree!
