For the 2015 RISE program, one could apply and be deemed academically qualified. However, unless the program organizers were subsequently able to identify a suitable mentor, the applicant was not “placed” and was effectively rejected. Moreover, it was very helpful if the applicant had an existing relationship with a BU, Harvard, or MIT professor and could recommend that person as the mentor. Has this changed for the 2016 RISE program?
The approach described above differs from that of many/most other summer research programs, wherein mentors are “locked in” prior to the admissions process. That is, the organizers at these other programs know in advance how many applicants they can accommodate.
@nikerzz99 So we’ll probably know by April 11. No doubt we’re academically qualified to do the work at BU; it’s just that they have to pair us up with a mentor before we’re notified of our acceptance.
haha, Bay Area represent
I haven’t found a Facebook page for accepted students, though that would be nice to have. I was accepted to the internship track, but I’m trying to decide between attending this program and going to Governor’s School for the Sciences – does anyone have any suggestions?
@musicalechoes when were you notified of acceptance? Do they release acceptances Tuesdays and Fridays?
@Cornbread1999 I was notified last Friday, so maybe?
oh I see
still haven’t heard back from them
For those of you who get accepted and are not from Boston, how are you planning on getting the extra stuff they want us to have? I don’t know how to take a fan and linens on a flight…
I am in the same situation as many of you- I was given an “application update” on March 24th but haven’t heard anything else (i.e. accept, deny, etc). Does anyone know if they send out letters with 2 waves or…?
Not sure, but there have already been at least 2 waves – March 29 and April 1
@NoFutureXD I would suggest buying any of the heavier or bulkier things after you arrive. My roommate is from China, and she just went to Target one day after she came here and bought everything she needed.
I got my acceptance email a week ago for the internship track. I’ve been trying to make the FB group for this summer but apparently I need one other member to make it a group? Can anyone email me so I can add as a friend?
Anyone going to the program this summer join the group!

I haven’t been accepted/rejected yet. I got the application review email a few weeks ago and emailed them a couple days ago. They said I should be hearing in a week or two. Is anyone else still waiting for a decision?
@tankamasa I am waiting for a decision as well
Wow did any of you get rejected? Do you think it’d be rude of me to ask them why they rejected me (since we’re applying to college next year and I want to know what I should fix?)
haven’t heard from them yet, but by the looks of it, I think I will get rejected
For those that got accepted, what days of the week did they send the email out? I’m trying to figure out the pattern haha
@tankamasa
I got my acceptance on March 30, almost exactly 4 weeks after submitting my application. For those accepted first hand, the letter of intent is due in 2 weeks of the receipt of the acceptance email. I think the review process takes 4 to 6 weeks because the first lot is chosen within the 4 weeks, and for those who choose not to attend or do not give them a reply in that 2 weeks, their spots will be given to applicants who come after (a waiting list, if you will).
I think the second wave of acceptances will be coming in later this week, or earlier next week at the latest.
Good luck!
Haha, I actually just got accepted into the Research track!
@tankamasa
Congrats! You should join the FB group lol
