What's the story on personal printers? Bring one or not? Are there any in the dorms? Is there a printing fee? Anything we should know about?

Thanks.

I suggest you go to the source for questions about how freshmen dorms are equipped. From the colgate.edu website’s header for your class of 2014 I found a list of deadlines for different purposes and contacts for each including the Office of Residential Life (reslife@colgate.edu; 315-228-7367). Why not get in contact with them?

I had a cheap Dell printer that came for free with my laptop and it was certainly convenient, but the computer labs on campus are sufficient for most people. There’s labs in several different buildings on campus and in the library with both PCs and Macs, so you can always just print your papers before class.

I don’t think any of the dorms have them, certainly not in the apartments/townhouses for upperclassmen. The first-year dorms are all within a <5 minute walk of a computer lab anyway.

There’s no fee and no page limit (at least there weren’t 2 years ago). There are small fees for using the copiers in the library, but you pay by 'Gate Card so it’s not a big hassle as long as you remember to keep money on there (you’ll use it for laundry anyway).

Markham & Lydia - thank you for your input. Much appreciated. :-)

No fee, but there was a page “limit” last year of 100 pages per job. I put limit in quotes because there was nothing stopping you from printing pages 1-100 of a document in one job and then the rest in another.

I had no problem not having a printer freshman year - I actually preferred it because it meant that I had to get up and stretch my legs when I was done with something. All of the freshmen dorms are pretty close to a lab and they’re open pretty late
