Broadway Breakthru - College Breakthru summer program

Does anyone have information about Broadway Breakthru’s summer College Breakthru program in Chicago? Is it a worthwhile program that will provide good preparation for the college audition process? D is a junior and will be auditioning next year. Thanks in advance for any input!

@ac2680 I’m going to private message you

@ac2680 I would love to find out your opinion of this program as well, if you wouldn’t mind messaging me as well. Thanks in advance!

@ac2680 Can you also send me a PM with your thoughts. Thanks!

Sorry, I’m just seeing this ohmom2017. I am unable to private message - I don’t think I have enough posts on CC to allow me to do so. I would love to discuss this with you, though.

@Youngweb & @ohmom2017 Unfortunately, I can’t private message anyone. Would love to discuss this, though.

Can you post your thoughts here?

We were concerned about the level of training since it is a newer, less competitive program. Someone who went last year said their daughter really enjoyed the program and felt she learned a lot from it. The list of college programs represented is impressive, and receiving feedback from so many different faculty members should help with the upcoming audition season. My daughter has decided to attend the College Breakthru program in June. I’d welcome any input you may have.

My daughter did the pre college program last summer - seeing the line up and the scholarship opportunities they are offering for this new program looks very interesting.

My daughter was just accepted to CBT and she will give it a go. She is a rising senior gearing up this summer for prescreens/auditions so this program should be helpful. She did the NYU/Tisch New Studio month-long program last summer and loved it.

@Youngweb my daughter is also a rising senior. She just found out her friend is attending CBT based on the recommendation of her voice teacher who is on staff at one of the top MT programs. So that’s encouraging!

@Youngweb @ac2680 I have been reading posts for quite a while but think I need to jump in and start contributing now that my son is going into his junior year. We are looking for programs for next summer. Did your daughters like Broadway Break Thru this summer? Thanks!

@boxerdogmom my daughter is attending Emerson College’s 5 week program and is absolutely loving it. Filled with high intensity dance, lots of singing, working on and prepping for auditioning and much more. Also getting her feet wet about what living in the city would be versus rural colleges.

@MTVTmom I am happy for your daughter. My son visited Emerson last summer and really liked it. He loved Boston too. So we will keep their summer program in mind. I was hoping he might be able to do a couple next summer so week or two week long camps have been appealing. I also liked how some of them have faculty from different schools. I thought that might be beneficial. But who knows! We are still trying to figure it out so your input is much appreciated!

@boxerdogmom & @ac2680. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just noticed your questions. I posted this in the Summer thread.

We discovered the inaugural College Break Thru one-week MT intensive in Chicago. Rising senior daughter had a great week. She won 2 scholarship awards: $20K from AMDA (including on-the-spot artistic acceptance) & 4K from Texas State.

Best of all, she had great master classes from 20+ top MT colleges. Good opportunity to make a first impression and connection with many of the schools to which she will be applying. The audition feedback was very constructive. Nice facilities at the University Center in Chicago.

It was an honor to meet Melody Herzfeld and Sawyer Garrity from Parkland, FL. And special thanks to Chyrssie Whitehead from AMDA and Kaitlin Hopkins from Texas State for their encouragement.

Well done David Petro and the Broadway Break Thru staff! I think this will become a popular intensive going forward. We live in the NYC area and made the trip out to Chicago. It was worth it.

@boxerdogmom and update to my previous post about Emerson - My D participated in Emerson College’s 5 week program and absolutely LOVED it. She worked with the faculty and the head of the MT program for the 5 weeks. She got to know them and they got to understand and know my D; which was incredible! She also took classes similar to the college classes and did work on all disciplines. Faculty spent extra time with her to answer questions and guide her to a position to where she is confident going into pre-screens/auditions this fall/winter. Emerson was already a college on her “list” but jumped to the top after living and breathing what a MT student would experience. They worked them hard and expected a lot out of them. They did do a dance audition on their first day and split the students up into groups based on their abilities and each student was assigned a vocal coach that they had lessons with each week. They had to write their own musical, write essay’s, research songs, learn dance choreo, had master classes, got to see “Moulin Rouge” and experience what going to college in a city setting would be like. It was pricey, but worth every penny after hearing about her experience and then seeing how she has grown as a performer vocally, intellectually and the confidence she has now knowing she survived a 5 week-college MT boot camp. AND she got to audition for the school, eliminating one pre-screen and live audition that we need to do!

Thanks so much @MTVTmom. Super helpful and good to hear. Thanks for taking the time to let us know.

@boxerdogmom sorry for the late response. I’m not the best at navigating these sites! My daughter loved Broadway Break Thru. She felt the feedback from the coaches was incredibly valuable heading into the audition process. When I asked her if she would choose to attend again she said “definitely”! Hope that helps.

Thank you @ac2680. That is helpful to hear.

Do not associate yourself with this program it is a scam. They lied about scholarships, payment to staff and are currently embroiled in some pretty hot water. Read below. don’t fall for this, the program was great for the kids but it’s clearly a scam.
