**Decision: Deferred **

Wait nvm

Outcome: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1460, Math: 780, English: 680
ACT (breakdown): n/a
SAT II: didn’t send lmao
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): school doesn’t do unweighted but my weighted is 4.16 (pretty low tbh)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
AP (place score in parenthesis): n/a
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, AP French, AP AB Calculus, AP Art History, AP English Literature, Studio Art
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): n/a

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (Member of decorative committee), Philosophy Club (vice pres), Students Concerned for the Needy (VP of Projects), Habitat for Humanity (Head of Fundraising Committee), Model UN, French Club
Job/Work Experience: Worked as file clerk for an attorney for the last 2 years
Volunteer/Community service: Youth Red Cross Council in my county (Membership Adviser),
Summer Activities:

Interned on Phil Murphy Gubernatorial Campaign 2k17
Interned on Tom Malinowski Congressional Campaign 2k18
Interned for partner of a law firm
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9.5, Ik that sounds cocky but deadass I swear my essays were the only thing pushing my application forward lmao. I actually really liked them, I tried to make them encapsulate my “personality” and kept working to make them memorable. I let myself be funny when I wanted to and talked about things I genuinely wanted to talk about. Also my essays were really personal. Each one was pretty specific to me and kind of made the reader (at least my intention anyways) sort of resonate with my “character”
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8, I know one of my reccomendations was really good but the other one I can’t be sure because I lowkey had a breakdown in front of that teacher and idk how she interpreted that.
Teacher Rec #1: One was my ap chem teacher/philosophy club adviser and this one I think really pushed me forward. I have a really good relationship w him. He’s very eccentric and he helped me find direction when I was in a low place.
Teacher Rec #2: This one I can’t be sure about. I was a good student and nice to her but there was no real personal relationship. I broke down in front of her once and I think she maybe sympathized w me but it didn’t exactly bridge us together so who knows tbh.
Counselor Rec: No idea, my counselor barely knows me
Additional Rec: none
Interview: My interview went really well. It was over the phone and we actually had a really fun and engaging conversation. We talked for like an hour and a half. I made her laugh a few times too which raised my confidence teehee. She was really sweet  By the end of it she said she hoped I got good news in December which was a little telling of how the interview went.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: lmao haven’t applied for fasfa yet … college tuition? who is she
Intended Major: Double major in international relations and literary arts
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 80k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection
Strengths: My essays were very passionate, shout-out to my aries moon haha. Also my extracurriculars and classes and essays made me out to be a pretty “pointy” individual in that most of my stuff fell into the political science / law side of things. (My long term goal is law school so that’s important :P). I think that helped me sell myself as an applicant.
Weaknesses:
My gpa lmao lowest out of all of my friends I’m gagging. Also no awards bc I was dumb and insecure about my writing and also deadlines and I don’t get along so …
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Cohesive application, personality really shined through while also being pretty personal,
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
None bc ED

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8, they were good and obviously I made the super personal to my interests in jump rope, economics, political science, etc.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8.5, one I know was great, but the other may have been lackluster, and school counselor’s was probably great
Teacher Rec #1: 9, from my IB Economics teacher; he loves me and I have continually excelled in his class as a top student, and I got super close to him during junior year, as he also was my advisor for my 4000-word Extended Essay (min-thesis) for IB
Teacher Rec #2: 7, from my IB History of the Americas teacher; he also loves me, but I did not excel in his class like I would have liked to in junior year (ended both semesters with 91s), but I still think he would’ve touched on the contributions I have made to class discussions and such
Counselor Rec: 9, from my only school counselor; I went on two college visit trips with him, so I also got super close to him, and I have no doubt in my mind that he would have written a superb letter of recommendation
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: 8.5, went super well, as my interviewer had only graduated two years ago, so we really connected in that sense; she was also from Texas (like myself), so we clicked on how moving to RI would have been a great change; thought I would be a great fit for Brown!

Reflection
Strengths: I think my ECs and test scores would have been great strengths for me, especially considering how much time I spent on ECs like my jump roping (which I included a video of), and test scores were in 75th percentile
Weaknesses: Perhaps my grades, second letter of rec, and no major internships; grades dipped a little bit in 11th grade, so that may have been a small red flag; second letter of rec probably made them question; no major internships to show my interest in econ or polisci, whereas plenty of kids have something like that, probably put me in the deferred category
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Explained a little bit above, but in due part to my weaknesses
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Maybe my essays could have been better?

General Comments:
I will be honest: I was a little shocked to see I got deferred. I thought I was going to get in, especially because I applied ED. I thought that I kind of fit the mold for what Brown was looking for in a student (well-rounded, interested in a lot). However, I now realized that this college admissions thing is a giant game, and perhaps I could have played it better along the way in HS. We will see how RD decisions come back, I guess.

Volunteer/Community service: Children’s Museum, various YMCA volunteering, nhs and environmental club volunteering events.
Summer Activities: Maine Students Week Kneisel Hall, Lab Internship, Writing workshop with state branch of NPR
Essays (rating 1-10, details): i dont really know how to grade them but just make sure you’re really specific and you’re always talking about yourself. Dont be general and make sure you’re saying things honestly. You want to be specific because it shows you’ve done your research and that you want to go to that school but also shows how you’re different based on what you value or specific experiences youve gone through or specific ways you think or percieve things.

Teacher Rec #1: Biology teacher. We are really close and she guided me through all of my research. She had me for two years and as a TA this year.
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher. I won the English award for his class junior year. Wasnt as close with him as my bio teacher but we were buds.
Counselor Rec: I go to a fairly small school but also participated in a club my guidance counselor advised and had a much closer relationship with her than a lot of my teachers.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: was the nicest person I’ve met in a while and we had a really interesting conversation. He was very honest about whether he thought I fit Brown and why (he thought I did) and also on what Brown’s strengths and weaknesses were as a school.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Environmental Studies and Linguistics
State (if domestic applicant): Maine
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Semi-Private
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Gender
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I am very interested in interdisciplinary studies and the connections between what I study which is very fitting for a Brown student.

Reflection

Strengths: my recommendations, ecs, essays
Weaknesses: course load, common app essay,
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I fit the school very well and emphasized that even though I also didn’t need to change or exaggerate.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: n/a

General Comments : I think making sure the school is a good match is really important. I also think Brown looks for students interested in a wide variety of things and that have experienced many different things, Making sure the school you apply to matches who you are though I think is essential. The school will definitely see if you’ll fit in. Also, talk about yourself the entire time. When you talk about why Brown or your home emphasize yourself now not just in the past or the school without you. Sorry this isnt proofread or anything, I wrote it in a hurry lol

Job/Work Experience: I work at Dunkin Donuts lol
Volunteer/Community service: N/A
Summer Activities: Went to a universal cheerleading association summer camp
Essays (rating 1-10, details):

 • Common app (10/10) Wrote about being a male cheerleader and the stereotypes and struggles that I faced right after my brother committed suicide. Very personal.
 • Area of Study Supplement: 9/10, I wrote about watching Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” in seventh grade and connected it to public health and my goal to help the environment and the people in it.
 • Open Curriculum Supplement: 10/10 Wrote about an economics topic called Gross National Happiness and how it could be a better measurement of the well-being of society than GDP. Connected it to Brown saying that I would love to study it at a school that values happiness so much.
 • Where Is Home Supplement: 9/10 Wrote about a reservoir near my house that I used to fish with my brother at, and where a shrine for him was built after he died.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 7/10?? AP Bio teacher wrote it but honestly, I felt like I was gonna get screwed over by my recs because they all seemed so general.
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10?? English III teacher
Counselor Rec: NO IDEA how good this was bc my school got a new guidance counselor in the fall of my senior year but I guess it must’ve been good.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: 11/10 VERY GOOD. I was lucky enough to have it with an alum from my high school. Said she’d love to see another student from there go to Brown and she was so easy to talk to. I think she really liked me and after I told her I got in she said to keep in contact!

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Public Health
State (if domestic applicant): MA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >$60,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Male Cheerleader? I tried to highlight that lol

Reflection

Strengths: I think that my writing really showed how authentic I was. I didn’t try to hide the fact I had bad test scores or anything. I also think that Brown really saw my story and understood that the stuff I went through shaped me to be an impressive student. Also, there weren’t that many opportunities available to me and I think they realized that.
Weaknesses: TEST SCORES!!! Literally, have ZERO clue how I got in without taking a single SAT subject test and having such a low SAT. Also, I accidentally sent all my sat scores to them, not just my highest so I was scared haha. I also have no real specific and unique extracurriculars.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I just crafted my application very well. Also, I think my writing got me in. I spent so long on my essay/supplements, and I think it paid off.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Fordham University

General Comments: I truly thought I had NO SHOT at getting in. I was expecting a deferral at best. Looking back, I really think that the officers at Brown took a chance on me and felt something when reading my app.

[aB][asize=4][acolor=#FF0000]Decision: Rejected **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1460 (730 on both)
ACT (breakdown): 29 (didn’t submit, 24 science, 27 math, 31 English, 35 reading)
SAT II: none
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.5 uw, 4.1 w
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 on AP stats, AP lang, AP human geo, APUSH
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: ASL 2, AP Gov, AP psych, AP macro/micro, AP lit, AP calc AB
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): ASL club (founder/president), JSA (treasurer), city youth council member, girls who code, I was president and founder of another club but I can’t put it here because it’s very likely people will know who I am…
Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service: Hospital volunteer (360+ hours), STEM + ASL + geography volunteer teacher for preschoolers, science fair judge for preschoolers, member of 2 youth committees that worked to expose younger students to STEM and leadership (again, I have to be vague because these are things you can search up and identify me)
Summer Activities: they’re all up there
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Okay, so here’s the breakdown: my common app is a 7/10 but once I submitted my essay for brown, I did a ton of revisions. The rest of the supplemental essays sucked. Honestly, I thought they were good, but looking back, I’d rate them a 5/10. Or a 6/10 if I’m feeling generous, which I’m not.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9/10, I read this one.
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10, we were tight
Counselor Rec: 8/10, honestly, she and I had a close relationship but I feel like she’s not good at these.
Additional Rec:
Interview: I did a video portfolio which I don’t recommend. It’s easier, more fun, and more effective to do an interview.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: heck yeah, I’m broke.
Intended Major: Economics
State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, large (2000+ students)
Ethnicity: Asian :frowning:
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >60,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none.

Reflection

Strengths: I don’t think I had any. My test score was okay, but looking back, I can see why they rejected me, as crushing as it is.
Weaknesses: My essays. They could have been a lot better. Since then, I revised everything I wrote, and I can confidently say that the rest of my essays for other schools were awesome (but I’m biased lol), but my Brown ones SUCKED. I cannot believe I ever submitted those. My grades were also not there. I went from a 3.8 sophomore year all the way to a 3.5 because Junior year was a train wreck. KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES PEOPLE (don’t double up on math if you struggle in just one class). I had no subject tests. My overall application was just crappy. And my video portfolio was cringy.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: all the reasons above.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m writing this 3 months after I got my decision, so I was accepted at Urbana and St. Olaf, waitlisted at Macalester, and I’m waiting to hear back from the rest.

General Comments: I’ve always wanted to write one of these lol
