Reflection

Strengths: Cancer research EC probably carried my entire application lol. My essays were insightful to who I am and what my situation is. My recs were really good.
Weaknesses: Only 1 subject test score and it wasn’t even perfect lol. Not many awards. A lot more people have better stats and ECs than me.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: That Emperor Science Award + my essays + my economic situation and my other adversity were a killer combo.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments: I’m just happy that I got in. I’m the first one out of all my extended family to get into an Ivy. Good luck to all applicants in your future endeavors. “No matter how dark the night gets, the sun will rise again.”- someone

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9.5/10 My common app essay was about my transition from being homeschooled to going to a public high school. I am not going to cap but it was very very good, I feel like it encapsulated who I was and told a very deep story about the trials I had and how I overcame them. (I did use collegevine, I am not being paid to advertise but they make a world of difference. If you have the money pay for their service.)

Supplementals were 10/10, all anecdotal instances from life reflected into my answer to the prompt. Collegevine did a lot of work with me on the essays.

PLME Supplementals: Got deferred, but felt the PLME essays were very very solid as well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 11/10: This teacher was my debate coach that I did a ton of work with. I had him from AP Psych and AP Gov. I was a stellar student in the class and a very talented debater that won many competitions under him. He thought very highly of me and wrote an amazing letter I felt I did not fully deserve it.

Teacher Rec #2: 10/10: Had this teacher for all Math courses up until senior year. I was a solid student in the classroom, I played soccer against his son and so we rubbed elbows a lot outside of the classroom. Not only did we have a great relationship in the classroom but I feel like even outside we were great friends so I feel like he could speak to my talent as a student and my interpersonal skills.

Counselor Rec: 8/10 I got written up 3 times throughout high school FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE REFERRALS DO NOT BE AFRAID TO APPLY IVY!! IT DOES NOT MATTER. She thought I had some behavior problems but also knew I was a good student. So this rec could have gone either way, I did not read it.

Additional Rec: 10/10 I had two other supplementals recs. One was my principal (we were very close because my school was small and she saw the high aspirations I had from a young age, I felt she wanted to see me succeed), she wrote an amazing letter about my research and work ethic. The other was my on-site research mentor for my published project, she wrote me an amazing letter as well, we were not close but she thought highly of me and was just an overall positive and very smart woman. She was accepted to Yale and was very aware of what I wanted to do and supported me.

Interview: My interviewer was SOOOO awkward, he did not ask any questions and I had prepared HELLA lot. We talked about literature from the Elizabethan time period because that was his major…I knew enough to get by because I took a Brit Lit survey course…but honestly it was very off-topic and I tried to get it back on topic so I could talk about myself. He thoroughly enjoyed our interview…even though I was on edge…but him enjoying it was all that mattered. I sent him my essays. which he liked, and this gave him personable stuff to say about me in his letter…but if it was not for that, I do not think I would have gotten a good rec from him. 9/10.

Summer Activities: A few college programs and leadership seminars (WFU, UNC, etc.)
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Why Open Curriculum- 9/10 Really cool bc I related it to Poe’s The Raven and how linguistic variations of it influence ppl’s perception of horror. I liked it and showed my passion for Classics and Linguistics, but could have been a little more specific with more space tbh.
What you offer- 8/10 I talked about my ability to communicate with others and how I learned those skills during a study abroad exchange in Germany this Summer (GAPP)
Home essay- 10/10 I talked about my extremely rural and conservative roots in a compelling way that showed how I did not fit the status quo of where I came from since I’m very liberal and not very religious.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
AP Lit teacher- 10/10 the nicest most kind teacher and a brilliant writer. super close with her and she knows my work ethic and character
AP Latin teacher- 8/10 A bit less warm than my AP Lit teacher, but I’ve known her for all four years so it made sense.

Teacher Rec #1: see above
Teacher Rec #2: see above
Counselor Rec: 5/10 she’s SO out of touch and is over worked. She likes me but probably finds me annoying because I ask her so many questions. She’s nice but probably not very personal
Additional Rec: 12/10 this is my Quiz bowl and French teacher who does college prep stuff with her own business. I’ve known her for years and she more than anyone else probably helped to convey who I am. She’s incredibly intelligent and edited all my essays.
Interview: 12/10 It honestly was a major factor to why I think I got in. It only lasted about 45 min, but we really connected after a little while. At the end, she asked me what I wanted to say to my admissions counselor, because she was so impressed by me lol. she wrote down what I said and I’m guessing they rly vibed lmao.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Classics
State (if domestic applicant): NC (the BACKWOODS I’m telling you and I think it helped lol)
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Charter
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 120K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): LGBTQ+, VERY rural

Reflection: I think what honestly got me in was just a combination of everything together. I really played up my rural card and how I didn’t fit the stereotype of a white guy from NC (where I’m from toxic masculinity, blind religious faith, homophobia, and racism are everyday occurrences which is why I can’t WAIT to be in RI  )

Strengths: see above
Weaknesses: test scores are mediocre at best (for Brown that is)
