Brown and international students

Hi!

I have a question concerning Brown’s international students’ admission. As I understand, Brown is need-based but NOT need-blind for international student- that is, it will NOT admit international students only based on their academic performance but also on their ability to pay for the tuition and living expanses.

From what I understand, international students who are in need for high financial aid (>$20,000) have much lower chances for admission than those who only need a minimal amount of aid. In fact, there is a direct relationship between the ability of an international student to pay for college and his chances to get admitted- the less financial aid an international student needs the better chances he (or she) has.

So my question is simply- is that really the case in Brown?

Well, no one (not even US citizens) are admitted “only based on their academic performances”. There is an array of factors that is considered in coming to an admission decision. If you are an international student, the ability to pay is one of those factors, whereas if you are a US citizen, it is not. No one (at least not me) can say for sure what is the exact relationship between the amount of aid needed and the chances for admission.

Yes, brown is need aware for internationals, however, in my opinion, its not THAT awfully need aware. I know lots of internationals who have been accepted at brown with high financial need but have been declined at other need blind schools. So, you have a shot!

I second aj1410 and aleph0 I got in with a big sum of fin aid need :)

I think from what I have heard that also WHERE you are from internationally may have an impact on the financial aid needed vs not acceptance decision. If you are from an “under-represented” part of the world, that will help, vs coming from India or China. (although does China pay tuition? Just a weird thought from someone who knows nothing about that.)
Also there are a fair number of International students at Brown from United World College schools, in part because there is a very generous scholarship fund to help them attend Brown.
