[ size=4][ color=orange][ b]Decision: Deferred **

[ color=red][ b]Comp Lit / Envi Studies / Business**

[ b]Objective:**
[ list]
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 2210 (780 CR, 670 M, 760 W)
[ *] SAT II: 690 Math I, 700 Literature
[ *] Unweighted GPA: 3.74
[ *] Weighted GPA: 3.93
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): HS doesn’t rank
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): English Lang (5), Envi Sci (3)
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: AP US Gov, AP Comparative Politics, AP English Literature, Honors Calc, Physics
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 11 quarters on the honor roll, University of Rochester book award, French National Honor Society
[ b]Subjective:**
[ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate (4 years, captain, nationally successful), fall marketing internship, French Club, skiing (recreational). Debate pretty much ate up all my time
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Part-time job at Panera, former professional blogger (freshman/soph year only)
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Helped out at a soup kitchen occasionally
[ *] Summer Activities: Debate camp, science expedition in Dominica, French exchange
[ *] Essays: Outstanding (IMO). My common app essay conveyed a unique angle on debate which my English teachers and counselor ADORED. Didn’t show my Brown essays to anyone, but I thought they were also very good; my “why Brown” essay related Nudity Week to social and intellectual self-expression (gotta stand out somehow). I also send in a short piece of prose I wrote about growing up queer in a heteronormative environment.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Both teachers loved me.
[ *] Counselor Rec: I got a new counselor this year, so he didn’t know me that well. Still wrote an OK rec, I’d assume.
[ *] Additional Rec: None
[ *] Interview: Went wonderfully; interviewer promised a “glowing” recommendation.
[ b]Other**
[ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): NH
[ *] School Type: Private, religious
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: ~100,000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Czech (bilingual & dual citizenship), queer in a Catholic school
[ b]Reflection**
[ list]
[ *] Strengths: Essays, quality of ECs (intensity of debate + marketing internship), diversity of academic interests, teacher recs, interview
[ *] Weaknesses: GPA, SAT scores, lack of course rigor (not entirely my fault though – my school doesn’t let you take more than 2 AP courses simultaneously), quantity of ECs
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA & lack of course rigor
*Essays: I spent months working on my essays and and a million drafts to make sure each essays revealed something new about me. My comm app essay was about a mishap on a road trip with my dad two months before he passed away which I used a metaphor for my struggle with grief

*Teacher Recommendation: I am positive one was really good because my chem teacher has known me for years and has seen me change during the biggest struggles of my life.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Haven’t. applied to PLME ED

GENERAL COMMENTS: I was shocked I got in (I started hugging random people in school) because there are a million amazing people out there.

Good luck to everyone still applying to school and to people who may see this in the future. Try not to over stress and just breathe. Whatever happens, happens. I strongly believe that we all end up in a place where we can flourish as long as we have the right mindset.

[] Teacher Recommendation: Not sure (thanks FERPA), but I think both the teachers I asked to recommend me were able to speak to different aspects of who I am, so hopefully that gave admissions a fuller picture of me.
[] Counselor Rec: Also not sure. The student to counselor ratio at my school is around 500:1, but I’ve pestered her with enough questions over the years that I think she knows me pretty well.
[] Additional Rec: None, although I was planning to ask the teacher that oversees the debate program where I coach to send in a letter if I got deferred.
[] Interview: I think it went really well, but that seems pretty par for the course. It seems like all of the interviewers love to talk to prospective students.

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Standardized test scores (although it seems like those mean less and less), unique extracurriculars, essays
[] Weaknesses: I was a little worried about my rank/GPA (especially since there were other people from my school that applied with higher GPA/rank), but in the end it didn’t make a difference.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my essays were the thing that made the difference in the end.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: The only other place I applied was the University of Minnesota, got accepted into the College of Biological Sciences there.
[/ul]

**General Comments: **
I’m thrilled to have been accepted! There just aren’t even words to explain how excited I am. I was bracing myself for a deferral because of the sheer number of applicants, but I was totally blown away when I logged onto self service.
Best of luck to all that were deferred—if it helps, my interviewer mentioned that her daughter applied ED and got deferred then accepted RD. She’s a junior at Brown now.

I am about as excited as I could possibly be. I was very surprised by my decision. Every advisor that I spoke to told me it would be a waste of time, (Guidance counselor included) but I just had a deep feeling that they would see past my grades for what I can offer the school. Obviously, there is a difference between ignoring reality, (like if you never challenged yourself whatsoever) and being hopeful. If you feel like you have a shot, what do you have to lose?

Reflections:
Strengths: Transcripts = GPA, Course load since I took over 14 AP/ IB Classes, Why Brown Essays, and Recruiting Athlete (Ranked top 50 nationally for all seniors )
Weaknesses: Brown Interview (It was not what I expected, questions caught me off guard)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I didn’t apply anywhere else since I was recruited, but if things didn’t work out at Brown, I might have gone to Columbia (Columbia also offered me a spot but I decide to attend Brown due to overall campus life) - In addition if Brown didn’t accept, I would have applied to U Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Carnegie Mellon as coaches there were interested in me and they say my grades/transcript would not be a problem.

General Comments:
Exicted to be a Brown Bear! Looking forward for the open curriculum classes and design my path. Even if I had choice of other Ivies and schools, just love the atmosphere and the students at Brown, and the CS Dept. (Brown Reminds me of an East Coast Berkeley). Feels like Brown is where I will thrive both academically, and athletically.

[] Strengths: Definitely math, probably science too.
[] Weaknesses: Writing, lack of leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because I tweeted at Brown like 100 times “plz love me as much as I love you”
Honestly I’m not really sure. The class seems so wildly talented and I’m just… me? I think my internship and proven dedication to engineering really helped. They probably liked the duality between social justice/environmental stuff and math/science/tech person? I’m in awe though.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: University of Minnesota - Accepted

**General Comments: ** At all you class of 2020 kids panicking over College Confidential right now, it’ll be okay. Even if you don’t get into Brown you’ll be happy somewhere else. If you do get in, I’ll be glad to see you

[] Summer Activities: We’re a low income family so I work all summer.
[] Essays: Pretty good. My main essay was about being biracial, and was pretty creative. Brown also read my Questbridge Application essays, which were about my family and the struggles I’ve overcome in my life. Supplementals were decent.

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely recommendations, extracurriculars, and essays. I have really good grades for how hard my school is, but my GPA isn’t a 4.2 or anything. I’m a pretty well rounded person and really likely to get involved and give back to my community. I think my passion for learning really shone through, and I also did a good job discussing diversity and what it means to me/how Brown comes into that.
[] Weaknesses: Test scores were a little weak.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think Questbridge really helped. They read my application early on and couldn’t give me a scholarship, so they offered me an ED decision. I’m really thankful for the help the program has given me. See strengths.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: No where! I’m done.
[/ul]

**General Comments: **
Still really in shock. It hasn’t hit me yet. One thing that I really admire about Brown is how holistic they are in the application process. Just because you don’t have a 2400 doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get in. They weigh everything equally, and I think that makes for a really amazing and diverse school.

[] Job/Work Experience: Admission office student worker for 4 years, TA for Mandarin Immersion program for 1 year, TA for summer math class
[] Volunteer/Community service: Math and Chinese peer tutor for 3 years, KEY Club member (did not put this on my common app), volunteer at local museum
[] Summer Activities: TA for summer math class
[] Essays: Common App — wrote about myself in a really introspective way (don’t want to disclose the subject, sorry), Supplements — talked about why I was interested in econ while adding in aspects of my common app essay, had my dean and homeroom teacher look over all essays.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read either, but one teacher had a conference with me before he wrote it, so I’m guessing it was pretty personal.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: I’m not sure how well it went, honestly. She didn’t write anything down even though she had a notebook in front of her… I still don’t know if that meant she found me completely uninteresting or she didn’t have time to write anything down. At least there were no awkward lulls in the conversation!
[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): N/A

Other

[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: YES (without it I wouldn’t be able to go)
[] State (if domestic applicant): Hawaii
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Private, College Prep
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: < $30,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college student, low-income/high achieving (more economic diversity, I guess)
[/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Hooks (if you can even call them hooks), proved that I am a self-directed learner (took online classes and was essentially one of the first people to do so), sufficient test scores,
[] Weaknesses: ECs - no leadership (not true leadership, anyway), rushed my “Why Brown?” essay
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m just as surprised as you. However, I do think the coherency of my application helped a lot. I talked about some of my EC in my Common App essay and then I talked about elements from my CA essay in my Brown Supplemental essays. I also expressed my love of learning for the sake of learning and my ability to be a self-directed learner. I also think my First-Gen college student/low-income/high achieving status helped as well.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to University of Hawaii
[/ul]

**General Comments: **

Congrats to all that were accepted and good luck to deferred/denied applicants. The entire day decisions were out, I dreaded finding out my decision because I thought there was no way I could be accepted and I didn’t want to return to the reality of completing more college apps! I am so blessed and thankful for my opportunities and I expressed that in all of my essays/ECs/etc. To future ED/RD applicants, please do not fret and try to write about what you think Brown is looking for. It’s cliched but true. Don’t try to list too many things — be a concise/concentrated applicant the admission committee can remember: quality over quantity!

Like what my interviewer told me before we parted ways, “Miracles can happen!”

**Decision: Deferred **

b**

[]Objective:**

[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2260 (M 770, W 770, R 720)
[] ACT (breakdown): C 34 (but didn’t send)
[] SAT II: Math II 800, Bio-M 750
[] Unweighted GPA: 3.9
[] Weighted GPA: 4.3
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15/~550 (Competitive school)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Took 9 as of this year, all 4s or 5s
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP lit, AP Compsci, 2 Internships (classes), Calc 2 & 3, AP Psych, AP Gov, AP Macro
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): no major awards besides HOBY…a bunch of school-level awards though
[/ul]

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Interact (President, held positions for 3 years), Beta Club, NHS (Service Project Manager), Science Olympiad, Model UN, School leadership team, school’s PTSA Exec. Board, Varsity Tennis Team (all 4 years), Varsity Swim Team (all 4 years, captain)
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: besides all the service clubs I’m in, I volunteered a little more than 200 hours at my local hospital
[] Summer Activities: mainly just summer swimming and hospital volunteering…I regret not doing more.
[] Essays: All my essays were probably decent…I’m not that great a writer  (7/10)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Skimmed over both my teacher recs and they were pretty good (8.5/10)
[] Counselor Rec: Probably pretty generic since I go to a pretty large school
[] Additional Rec: REALLY should’ve submitted a rec from my internship mentor since I applied to PLME (an internationally renowned surgeon)…I probably will get him to write one for me for RD
[] Interview: AMAZING!! It lasted 3 hours and only ended because it was like 10 pm. I feel as though she really saw how passionate about Brown I was.
[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): none
[/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: DIdn’t for ED…but I will for RD
[] State (if domestic applicant): GA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: ~$150,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Indian Male is the one of the greatest anti-hooks there is.
[/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Really passionate about Brown, had an amazing interview, thought my ECs were pretty good
[] Weaknesses: Indian male (lol), test scores could’ve been better, essays could’ve been better, should’ve gotten an additional rec
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Besides my weaknesses listed above, I think that my chances were definitely significantly diminished as I stated that I only wanted to be considered ED to Brown if I got into PLME. This made the chance that I would get in go from 20% to 4.39%, which is obviously a huge jump.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far, I have been accepted to my state schools…but that’s it. Hoping for a successful regular decision cycle!!
[/ul]

**General Comments: ** While I honestly was expecting to get deferred, it still hurt quite a lot obviously. Guess I’ll just have to wait until April!! It’s kind of nice that I can apply to other schools that I was really interested in as well, so there’s always an upside! Just persevere, and it’ll all work out in the end.

ALSO, if anyone has any questions or would like to give me advice (pls help), PM me!!
