[<em>] SAT II: 730 Lit, 720 US History
[</em>] Unweighted GPA: not available, most likely >3.9
[<em>] Weighted GPA: 4.71
[</em>] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/305
[<em>] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on Lang & Comp and APUSH; 3 on Bio (ew)
[</em>] Senior Year Course Load: AP Macroeconomics, AP Calc AB, AP Lit, AP US Gov, AP World History, Spanish 4 Honors, Honors Concert Choir, typical PE class
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Scholastic Gold Key and Silver Key Awards for poetry, AP scholar, National Merit Scholar commended</p>[/li]

<p>Subjective:

[ul]
[<em>] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model UN, 9 awards (President & head-delegate 2013-15, VP 2012-13); Student Council (President and BOE rep 2014-15, VP 2013-14); school musical in ensemble/dance company/minor roles (2011-2015); jazz/chamber choir, placed 2nd and 4th at two national competitions (Alto section leader); Class Council of 2015 (president 2011-13); NHS (VP); published poet (published 3 times with Creative Communications, 3 times in print and 11 times online with Teen Ink, twice with the Live Poets of NJ); Mu Alpha Theta
[</em>] Job/Work Experience: Just an internship at a local historic site
[<em>] Volunteer/Community service: Relay for Life team captain (3 years); tutoring biweekly through NHS; organizer of open mics, poetry slams, and movie nights at a teen coffeehouse in my town
[</em>] Summer Activities: took Intro to IR through the Young Scholars Program at the University of Maryland – I highly recommend the program!
[<em>] Essays: My common app essay is possibly the love of my life, my current AP lit teacher (who is also an English professor at NYU) raves about it any chance she gets. Although I was deferred, my advice for the commo napp essay is to choose any experience or moment that truly allows you to write your heart out! Brown specific supplements: Why Brown 9/10; where you have lived 10/10; group/community prompt 10/10; academic interests 6/10 (oops, I admit it was boring)
[</em>] Teacher Recommendation: 147/10 from my AP Lang teacher (it honestly made me cry), 8/10 from my APUSH teacher
[<em>] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read, but probably average
[</em>] Additional Rec: N/A
[<em>] Interview: 10/10; 2 hours long in a Starbucks. It was certainly more like a conversation than an interview, so don’t be nervous. Besides the beauties of Brown, my interviewer and I ultimately ended up talking about mental illness and other life struggles for a while (#realtalk) so don’t be afraid to talk about whatever’s important to you!
[</em>] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): N/A
[/ul]</p>

<p>Other

[ul]
[<em>] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[</em>] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[<em>] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[</em>] School Type: Public
[<em>] Ethnicity: White
[</em>] Gender: F
[<em>] Income Bracket: 100,000-150,000
[</em>] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation
[/ul]</p>

<p>Reflection

[ul]
[<em>] Strengths: ECs, essays, ACT, rank/GPA
[</em>] Weaknesses: SAT II’s, over-represented state, no huge awards, wish I submitted a music supplement, etc.
[<em>] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: ED applicants to Brown are obviously top-notch and it’s quite possible I just didn’t stand out enough! I plan on adding some awards and details about ECs in my post-deferral letter.
[</em>] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Northeastern (University Scholar full-tuition)
[/ul]</p>

<p>**General Comments: ** For me, applying ED to such an amazing school meant bracing myself for a deferral from the beginning. I wasn’t happy about my decision but I’m grateful that 1. Brown is giving me another chance and 2. I now have the opportunity to consider several other schools RD! Congratulations to those accepted, and for others who were deferred, hold in there! xx</p>

[<em>] Essays: Common app: English teacher said it was one of the best she had ever read, spent one month on it; supplements: also spent one month on them, in Why Brown I talked a lot about my visits to campus and included information about my Experience Brown day
[</em>] Teacher Recommendation: didn’t read, but I assume they were very strong. Asked teachers who taught the classes that I was most passionate about. They had seen how hard I had worked throughout high school and had me for more than one year. They also had expressed interest in the extracurriculars of the students and their lives outside of the classroom, which I felt was important.

    [

Other

  • [] Applied for Financial Aid?: oh god yes

[] Income Bracket: 70k but my mom who I live with makes 0k a year
    [
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): born without my right hand due to constriction band syndrome

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: essay, essay essay – I was able to use something that most people would view as a defect and shed positive light on myself; also my supplements focused a lot on how much I want to create new things during my time at brown, SAT I, class rank; also a girl applying to a STEM major
    [
] Weaknesses: vocational schools are not as academically rigorous; not many
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I am lucky enough to have been born without my right hand, which gave me a killer essay topic and a uniqueness that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Also, my passion for CS shown through. I believe that my physical disability and my unique major interest set me “apart” from the rest of the equally-skilled applicants.
    [
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: ED @ Brown; didn’t need to apply elsewhere

**ADVISE TO APPLICANTS: ** Play off of what you have that no one else does. You need to find something that sets you apart. Don’t be general–a love for academics, passion, drive are all too generic. Make it specific, make it personal. Make sure the admissions office does not and cannot forget you. Your application is as much for you to get into Brown as it is for Brown to get you.

I know that my reply is super late, so I’m sorry about that. But better late than never, right?

    [
] Weaknesses: GPA, rank, volunteer/summer stuff
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed a lot of passion/curiosity and justified why I wanted to go to Brown pretty well (in my opinion)
    [
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred UChicago EA, Accepted to second round of Deep Springs College’s admissions

**General Comments: ** Don’t read/take in what you hear on this website! I know that sounds awful but I was considering applying ED to somewhere much less selective because I didn’t think my grades were high enough for Brown. Also, explain stuff that needs explaining, i.e. I signed up to take a much more rigorous course load but couldn’t because of scheduling issues. Finally, stop comparing yourself to others. This process is a crapshoot for everyone, and just because you’re not the Valedictorian/don’t have the highest SAT score in your school doesn’t mean you aren’t qualified for schools like Brown. The “intangibles” of your application, in my opinion, matter much more than a lot of people think they do.

Also, I’m not really sure how this works, but you can pm me if you want about college stuff/Brown stuff. Sorry again for being so late!

Objective:

  • [] SAT I (breakdown): didn’t take
    [
    ] ACT (breakdown): 34, E 34 M 34 R 35 S 32
    [] SAT II: didn’t take
    [
    ] Unweighted GPA: 3.91
    [] Weighted GPA: 4.43
    [
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 9/350
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH 5, US Gov 5, Comp Pol 4, Lang and Comp 5, World History 5
    [
] IB (place score in parenthesis): don’t have IB at my schools
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Phys 2, AP Chem, AP Lit and Comp, AP Calc BC, Choir, Spanish 4, and independent studies about Sudan and economics (both one sem. long)
    [
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): A whole bunch. I did a huge amount of social justice work with planned parenthood and other organizations. I started a Dialogue group at my school, which was pretty big. All of my ECs were social justice except VP of NHS and VP of history club.
    [
] Job/Work Experience: Internship with a state senate political campaign
[] Volunteer/Community service: none??? idk I don’t remember listing any volunteer hours. I did say I volunteered with some organizations in the “Additional info” section, but I didn’t list hours or anything because I barely had any actual volunteer work. All of my EC stuff was social justicey.
    [
] Summer Activities: The internship with the political campaign
[] Essays: Common app was really good. About being adopted and jewish with divorced parents. Pretty sobby, but super triumphant and used extended metaphor of family tree.
–My supplements were all about social justice. I live in St. Louis about 15 minutes from Ferguson, so I exploited that lol. My “why brown” didn’t focus on any specific attributes of the school, but I talked about my visit and how some students there inspired me.
    [
] Teacher Recommendation: Not sure. One was super good from an english teacher who knew I wanted her to write about my social justice and in-class dialogue about those topics. Other was from a chem teacher who had me for both honors chem and AP chem, which was pretty eh I bet.
[] Counselor Rec: Really good. She’s super into social justice and LGBTQ+ work, so we connected over that.
    [
    ] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Really good, I think. We talked a lot about my independent studies. Independent studies are good I guess because, you know, independence.
    [
] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): none.

Other

  • [] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes (they gave me baaaaaaank)
    [
] State (if domestic applicant): St. Louis, Missouri
    [] Country (if international applicant):
    [
] School Type: Decent public school with around 1500 students.
    [] Ethnicity: White
    [
    ] Gender: Man
    [] Income Bracket: 90k ish
    [
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Adopted??? Does that count?? That’s it though.

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: literally my entire application was pointed to social justice. My recs, my EC’s, my essays. Everything. I have good scores and stuff too. HUGE upward trend in grades.
    [
] Weaknesses: I had SUPER bad grades my freshman year w/ a whole bunch of B’s. (In the end, I think this helped me because it showed growth)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Social justice
    [
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred Tulane EA, Waitlisted WashU, Accepted Truman State University. I also applied to Grinnell. Obviously once I got in I didn’t apply anywhere else lol.

**General Comments: **
SUPER EXCITED. It’s a crapshoot, and I hope everyone gets into a school they’ll enjoy.
