@astrobiodreams Where are your parents from? My parents are the same (I’m Arab/Muslim). My parents are democrats, but I’m much more liberal.
That’s what I love about Brown–you can have very open conversations and you don’t have to shy away from political stuff. We haven’t even gotten in yet but I think our conversation really shows the Brown spirit!
I don’t think it is good to be scared of people with different views. I am a Democrat but I think we can learn more if we are open-minded. Def not good to write people off due to their beliefs before knowing them.
Oh, okay. I was born in the US, my sister moved with my parents when she was two. There is a lot that I admire about what my parents have gone through as immigrants, but also a lot that I will never forgive them for re their closemindedness and neglectful parenting towards me and my sister. For my Communities supplement I wrote about how knowing other second generation immigrants has helped me be able to understand my family and culture complexly, and understand that neither the good nor the bad outweigh each other
^Of course! A large part of going to college is meeting people with different views. I love debate! I guess that’s one negative to going to such a liberal school, but it is still nice I think to be surrounded by people who support your views/values.
@geugen I am not scared of people for their views- I am scared of people who support violent actions against me and people like me. I have had friends who were libertarian- a political position I disagree with strongly, ideologically, but not morally the way I disagree with Trump supporters. Also, to clarify, when I said Republican, I meant people who are pro-Trump, not necessarily centrists/people who supported Romney but not Trump
@astrobiodreams I wrote my common app essay about my conflicting identities as both an Arab/Muslim and someone who has lived most of my life in the US.
i wrote my communities essay about growing up as a liberal minority in a conservative town and how it taught me to productively communicate with people
If it does come out on Thursday at 4 then I will most likely still be at school (I have so much on Thursdays lol–Student Gov, then Civil Rights team, then Robotics). I may open it at school…
I am sure that nobody at Brown or any good university would ever support violence against you! I had a teacher last year who sort of changed my whole view on these things. She was an anti-Trump Republican and I totally disagreed w/ her views on abortion etc but she was one of the kindest people I have ever met. Now I try to see people w/ different views for their character and not their politics.
