Brown Class of 2022 Applicants Discussion

@plzacceptme2x5 Astronomy and Geochemistry :slight_smile:

Yay a business major! Iā€™m a hopeful econ major, nice to meet you @plzacceptme2x5

Also can we talk about the fact that the college confidential smileys are the most terrifying thing ever? Is it just me, or is it moving? Edit: oh yeah itā€™s definitely blinking. Thatā€™sā€¦ creepy

chance me?

nice to meet you too! @naehyun Iā€™m really stressed bcz I know that most of my stats are lower than Brownā€™s usual but instead of stressing out iā€™d like to know more about all of you (in the hopes we all can meet at brown one day hahah) sooo iā€™m from southern california and as i said before iā€™m applying for business/entrepreneurship! i really enjoy volunteering at my local hospital and working as a hotel accounting assistant for the past three years :stuck_out_tongue:

A little about me: I am a girl, the oldest of 4. I have 3 younger brothers. I live in Maine, but I was born in Iraq. When I was 6 my family fled Iraq and we lived in Jordan for one year before moving to the US as refugees. I aspire to become a doctor, and I intend to concentrate in Biomedical Engineering. My interests range from the physical sciences to the humanitiesā€“I am very much right brained and left brained so I love the open curriculum because although I am definitely a STEM person I have passions for writing and politics and public health, etc. This really shows in my extracurriculars. I do scientific research and robotics and the science bowl, but I am also part of my student government, civil rights team, and Iā€™m editor-in-chief of my schoolā€™s literary and arts magazine. One of my proudest accomplishments is that Iā€™ve been published on the New York Times through their editorial contest. I wrote my editorial about the Presidentā€™s executive order on immigration that happened earlier this year. Obviously an issue that relates very much to me and my family. And thatā€™s pretty much a summary of my life lol.

Same, anxietyā€™s really getting at me now that we have less than 24 hours to go. Iā€™m trying to not worry about stats too much, hopefully they got my voice through my essays. (Iā€™m freaking out simply thinking that they already probably have decisions and just need to get it all on the portals now)

@naehyun mainly collage and installation art! I was hoping someone would have advice on all the supplements lol

Ooh, cool. What did you need advice for? @clalaore

@clalaore i was thinking about the dual program but i didnt think i could get into either one of risd or brown, much less both. I submitted a portfolio for brown though. Maybe i can help too?

@naehyun lol more like motivation. theres just quantity wise a lot to write to apply dual degree (Iā€™m RD) that ive been procrastinating

Ooh @clalaore I love collage and installation art! Iā€™m not applying dual degree, but I am also an artist and intend to take classes at RISD and I do mostly mixed media (bookbinding combined with art journaling) and installation art! Iā€™m currently working on a piece where I do (almost) daily art journaling spreads in a journal i made and then will cut parts of them out and create a collage to be displayed with the journal that is destroyed through both wear and tear over time of use and by being cut into parts for the collage, to symbolize the way that our memories of individual moments (the highlights that will be put in the collage) become separated from the day-to-day contexts of our lives (the book). What kind of installation art do you do? Iā€™ve never really shown it more than online or to individual people, never been in an actual exhibit, but Iā€™m super excited to meet a person my age who also does the same types of art!

@astrobiodreams that sounds sick I love the concept. how come you chose not to apply dual? I know some people think to best benefit from art school you should immerse yourself fullyā€¦

@reallytired247 yay hi ! did you submit a traditional portfolio (half from life etc) or a more conceptual one? brown is a reach anyways so I cant tell if I should wild out in the portfolio or not lol

@clalaore Iā€™m pretty shy about showing my art to people and didnā€™t have an assembled portfolio- also, my parents are very anti-art school, and I do have a career path in the natural sciences that I am very devoted to that I intend to double major to pursue (Astrobiology, double majoring Geochemistry and Astronomy), so I would just be overjoyed to have access to classes at a top-quality art school while I am in college, without needing to get a BFA

I plan to take classes at RISD too! Probably studio art or animation if they have classes for that, Iā€™m personally interested in digital art and design. Iā€™ve done some work for litmags and publications for my school but I also do small animations in my free time.

So many of you have been published in lit mags! When I was in middle school, I wrote poetry and was published in Cicada twice (ages 11 and 14)(i know that itā€™s just a teen magazine and not a real lit mag), but then gave up in high school because I thought it was an ā€œuncoolā€ hobby because everyone started writing poetry and I was scared of being seen as just another angsty teen you know? I donā€™t like to toss around the word ā€œinspireā€ because I feel like itā€™s overused but you guys are really inspirational, and make me want to learn more about what you do and learn from you about the things I never did or gave up but that you guys are amazing at

Well. Not sleeping tonight

Iā€™m actually super grateful for the people I hang out with in high school. Weā€™re all pretty nerdy so I was never really afraid to pursue what I liked. You seem like a super cool person! Hope to see all of you at Brown if the admissions gods blesses us

@Sleep_Deprived relevant to the username, I guess. I hope you can try to sleep a bit, itā€™ll make tomorrow easier to get through! Or at least bring a big thermos of coffee to school tomorrow or something
