Nor can I. Even if the GC is in his/her first year, there has to be other people in the counseling office who know the procedure; it is hardly new. If all else fails, the GC can read the Common App instructions, which are self-explanatory.
yup she said she would sent the transcripts but didnāt know what a mid year report isā¦
In the time she took to tell you that, she could have found it, filled it out, and sent it. It took me all of 2 nanoseconds:
http://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/application-updates/save-time-your-midyear-school-reports
lol- thanks !
I do think itās confusing. They ask for both a Mid Year School Report and a Mid Year Transcript. What is the Mid Year School Report if itās not the Mid Year Transcript?
Long time ago my spouseās dissertation advisor, who received his Ph.D. from Caltech, told us he wonāt recommend people study at Caltech as undergraduates, after seeing how students struggled there. I am sure real genius and those who would like to be pushed by their environment will like it there. It is just not for everybody.
Brown is a very different school. For example, unlike most colleges and universities, Brown does not invite Commencement speakers for the College Ceremony. On the College Green on Commencement morning, two members of the senior class, selected by a faculty committee, deliver short orations. It is this kind of low-key-atmosphere school which fits us and we would like to contribute to. At my childās high school, there were 15+ known Ivies/MIT admissions received (cross admitted included), however, there was only one Brown admission received. I hope you applied to Brown for the right reason. I hope you join us if given an opportunity.
@TheOldTimer why not? my Dās a social science major and premed.
@caleegalee : The question here regarding those two students from CT is not if it is possible to do a social science major and pre-med at the same time (med schools actually like it these days). The question is ādid they game the system by claiming that they are interested in underenrolled majorsā. This thread http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20865606#Comment_20865606 has some interesting discussion. Hopefully they did write some pre-med stuff in their applications. It is a risky show-off if they did not. In extreme case, AOs could rescind admissions due to misrepresentations. BTW, in Ivies, it might be difficult to do a social science major while doing pre-med because of committee letter system. I am sure you know the majority of those who claim they are pre-med at freshman year drop out involuntarily after a year or so. It is no joke to be a true pre-med at Ivies.
@TheOldTimer how would they rescind someone that already enrolled in the college for changing their indicated major?
@MaybeHarvard2022 : They just received their admissions at that time and immediately went on TV to say they want to do pre-med. If pre-med is not mentioned anywhere in the applications, it is subject to discussion if this is misrepresentation.
It was a long time ago but my brother was a political science major at Dartmouth but was also premed and ended up getting into Dartmouth medical school.
@burghdad : Definitely it is possible. On the other hand, the only thread I started here is at the JHU section asking why back in 2014 there were less than 300 graduated with Neurosciences degree at JHU, however, two years later in 2016 close to 400 graduated with Neurosciences degree, not counting more than 80 Behavioral Biology majors. Nobody answers my question so far. My own research so far indicates that it must have something to do with the new MCAT, which is longer and more difficult than the old one. If you know the answer to my question above, please let me know.
This 2015 April WSJ article about the new MCAT is worth reading (need to login)
Medical-College Entrance Exam Gets an Overhaul
New test is longer, covers more subjects and is more interdisciplinary than past versions
https://www.wsj.com/articles/medical-college-entrance-exam-gets-an-overhaul-1429092002
I guess a true genius definitely can do social sciences and pre-med at the same time. We are not.
In summary, the new MCAT test, the first major revision in 25 years, is longer (by 3 hours), broader (covering four more subjects), and more interdisciplinary than past versions.
Old >>> New
Total time (including breaks) 4 hr. 10 min. >>> 7 hr. 33 min.
Number of questions 144 >>> 230
Number of sections 3 >>> 4
Suggested prerequisite courses 8 >>> 11
scores range 3-45 >>> 472-528
OK. If someone can do classics major while on the sidebar doing well on this MCAT, I must admire that person is a real genius.
Brown has a very strong Neuroscience department which is interdisciplinary. These days, it seems biology major alone cannot cover MCAT.
@TheOldTimer wow that is a huge changeā¦
I have a distant family friend, who was accepted to Michigan State University in Neuroscience Undergrad and University of Michigan in Biological Sciences undergrad. (The colleges doesnāt have much importance here.) She wants to proceed in medicine. She says the reason she proceeded with Neuroscience is that the program is much more dense than that of BioSci and NS is more human centered, therefore eases the studying process for MCAT whereas BioSci is more generalized and not as enduring. Makes sense to me. @TheOldTimer
MODERATORāS NOTE:
For changing a major? Well, perhaps at a college that admits by major, like the UCās it might be an issue, but not at Brown or other Ivy League schools in this decade.
Regardless, the whole pre-med/MCAT conversation is wildly off-topic to this thread. Move on please.
I read this article āDonāt Send Your Kid to the Ivy Leagueā (https://newrepublic.com/article/118747/ivy-league-schools-are-overrated-send-your-kids-elsewhere) a couple years ago. While waiting for the Ivy Day in less than 8 weeks, it is worth to read it in advance.
I was deeply touched by this article āWhat is it like to be poor at an Ivy League school?ā (https://publicservice.fas.harvard.edu/news/what-it-be-poor-ivy-league-school). While some students at Brown take uber to classes (we are definitely not among them), please remember there are students who really went through hardships to get where they are today.
Do you know according to a dated 2016 article, Brownās admission rate was 7 percent for women, 11 percent for men, a 4-point gap? I have posted the admissions rate before but did not note the gender difference. In case you also applied to Cornell, the gap is the opposite there. For Brown, even with a 4% advantage for men, the school still admitted a lot more women than men ā¦ definitely something worth thinking about.
The following information is important for applicants who have applied for Brown financial aids.
If you are admitted in RD, in the portal there is a place (we did not notice it until last minute) you can upload financial aids packages from other schools. You must do so before a certain deadline. I would recommend you go to ADOCH and talk to financial aids office directly about your situation. Good luck to everyone.
