Brown Class of 2022 Applicants Discussion

I love how @Volunteerism immediately liked post #1356

Since someone was asking a financial aid question
here is a quick question from me: How many of you really think @writergirl0316 's file has been thrown out at this late stage? I feel sorry for those AOs. They are swamped by the number of files, which they need to process before a firm deadline. Do they have time to send an email to an individual just to comfort him/her by asking for more financial aid documentation? They must have better things to do
Same for late interview. Last year UCLA was the first school receiving 6 digit applications
it went up more than 10% again this year! People are crazy these days. Most of the top schools seem to have 10% more applicants this year. Sorry, we did occupy one spot in UCLA and one spot in Berkeley last year.

I saw someone receive a likely letter in the questbridge finalist groupchat

An update on the financial aid thing: IDOC doesn’t really make sense, since they would have been able to see my IDOC already from what I did send them. I indicated on my CSS profile that my family’s income changed between 2016 and 2017, so perhaps they were confirming that? They asked for my family’s 2017 tax returns & W-2’s. I didn’t know they could ask for more than we are required to submit if they want to get a bigger picture when making package – never heard of a school doing that before, but it seems most plausible.

@writergirl0316 : you need to upload your family’s tax returns & W-2’s. If you get admitted, every year you need to upload previous year’s tax returns & W-2’s. That is real money on the table. They need the real document to prevent fraud. Please keep us updated.

Of course, I was just saying that for Class of 2022 applicants, we’re supposed to use 2016 tax returns & W-2’s, which I did submit to all of my schools. My comment was that Brown asked me to add my 2017 tax returns & W-2’s in addition to this, which is typically used to calculate 2018-19 financial aid, giving them two sets of tax returns & two sets of W-2’s to use for my potential freshman package. @TheOldTimer

Do we have to upload financial aid information? Like if I didn’t upload mine will that affect the admission process?

“I feel sorry for those AOs. They are swamped by the number of files, which they need to process before a firm deadline. Do they have time to send an email to an individual just to comfort him/her by asking for more financial aid documentation?”

The AOs are NOT doing that. The requests for financial aid information come from the FINANCIAL AID OFFICE. They are separate offices.

@writergirl0316 : I missed the part about 2017 tax returns
I cannot say this is a good sign now
so you figure that out yourself.

@suzy100 : Here is a real question I never figure out the answer
If a school which claims they are need-blind happens to decide on the committee table to admit all those people who need financial aids, how do they resolve the conflict that there is no money to offer them? The financial aid office would just show AOs the FA budget for the year and ask them to figure out what to do. Now those poor AOs really have to start from the beginning to admit those who don’t need financial aids
and there is 3 days left before Ivy Day when they found out this

You might have read this “Open Letter To All High School Students Freaking Out About College Admissions” article before (https://www.bustle.com/articles/150464-an-open-letter-to-all-high-school-students-freaking-out-about-college-admissions), if not, although a bit early, it is definitely worth reading it at least once.

The first time I saw Brown’s institutional research reports, I was not even sure if they are intended to be made public. Although some schools have made their institutional research reports available, none is as complete as Brown’s. If you care to look, all the information you need are there. 62% of grades in life sciences courses are “A” (beats social sciences’ 60%), 144 students graduated in 2017 with computer science degree
You can find all the data you need there. Brown might not be for you after you read all those information. But I challenge you to go to other schools to find the information you need. It looks like they all have something to hide. Recently a lot of people have popup ad problem on CC. I have never seen a single ad on CC since I use Firefox with ABP. Open source is good. Open curriculum is good. School with open data is good.

@TheOldTimer: since when have you been collecting data “over the years?” You just showed up on CC in the last few months. I’ve been active in the Brown forum here since 2010. As well, I’ve been an alumni interviewer and have worked in other roles with Brown admissions since I graduated. Nothing that I have seen has indicated that Brown admissions selects certain students to receive alumni interviews or gives any other indication about admission before the day comes.

I’ve seen a lot of students on this forum seriously get their hopes up from things other people say, and be absolutely crushed when they aren’t accepted, especially when everyone else was telling them “you’re going to get in.” I don’t think it’s helpful at all to speculate on prospects of admission, and I think that you trying to purport that you have some secret “in” on their chances is honestly harmful.

@bruno14 : I respected your opinion very much. My child never got on CC. I have been lurking around for a long time. I found some contributors especially helpful, including you. For some reasons, many previous contributors on Brown threads stopped contributing, so I decided to contribute only on Brown threads. I have no secrets. Everything is based on statistical model.

BTW, why not getting a free pretzel while it lasts, one more hour in East Coast.

http://time.com/money/5184155/auntie-annes-free-pretzel-party/

@bruno14 : just finished my pretzel. I think you are right. Many people don’t have basic probability concept. I think I talked to them assuming that they know that although 1/3 chance is much better than 1/15 chance, they should know they still have 2/3 chance of being denied. The KS girl asked the acceptance rate for KS but the only data point is AO need to replace those 5 who are going to graduate this year. Brown gave out too much data, if someone models the data for several years, one can clearly see the patterns. It is data mining. Once the data has been modelled, it is not hard to do reverse engineering to see what someone is doing is not what they are saying. You might want to alert school to consider to take the data offline.

This would be my last post here.

I would like to give two examples who had “late interview”. One got in, Once did not. Hey!! One thing can be sure is you are “on the bubble”. My last opinion is that “on the bubble” is much better than “in the trash”.

Good Bye.

this is a university application forum jesus no need to be a drama queen
just say I hope you get in etc

To bring things back to normal question-answer format in this thread, does anyone know when brown will officially inform us the day decisions are coming out is the 28th? I know it’s ivy day, other schools have confirmed, but they haven’t officially told us yet, right?

Not that I have seen

Nevermind: from their website: “March 28 Regular Decision letters available online”

so only one person got a likely letter on this thread?
