Hey, I want to apply too. Into sophomore year though. I tried applying to Brown last year, but I was completely unserious and submitted my apps late so I don’t blame them for rejecting me! This year though, Im serious as hell and Ive been working hard here [I go to Boston Uni btw]. Ive gotten A’s on almost everything ive done so i think my GPA will be good. But since I applied before my chances might be slimmer. Oh and are the chances of getting in as a soph better than as a junior because so many more people apply as juniors… or am I wrong?

they only ask for them if your current school asked for them when u applied!

I’m applying to Brown! 3.65 GPA at Mary Baldwin college (taking the hardest classes that I can), will hopefully be up to a 3.75 by the end of the semester. I’m hoping that my lack of SAT scores past 8th grade (I got a 2130, planning to retake it and take SAT IIs) and high school transcript (I skipped) won’t affect me too much :(

@radioraja - when you say you “skipped,” does that mean you don’t have a high school diploma/transcript? i think it’s required, but if you’ve got your GED you might be okay. as for SAT/ACT scores, I think it’s if you’ve been out of school for more than 5 years or the college you’re currently at didn’t require you to send them.

@scaredtodef - the website says it is quite rare for a second-time applicant to be admitted, but i say go for it, if you don’t mind paying the application fee. i’m applying for sophomore standing (currently a frosh) and i’m scared that if i don’t get in this round, i’ll never have another chance (until grad school)! however, to answer your question, it is typically easier to transfer as a junior if you had poor HS credentials (less value is placed on them), however i’ve heard less students drop out after their sophomore year (meaning less junior spots) because by then, if they’re dissatisfied with Brown, they’ve already earned half of a degree and usually just stick it out. heck, i’d stay at brown even if i hated it for the educational value and resum

Hey! Just wondering what you guys think my chances are of getting in as a transfer to Brown. I would be a junior transfer. I’m currently at a pretty prominent state school, I have a 3.85 cumulative GPA (taking hard science classes), in addition to being on the school’s competitive dance team (time consuming). I’m also in the schools honors college.

I graduated from HS with a 3.992 (non weighted), and got a 32 composite ACT. I also got all 4s and 5s on AP tests (I’ve heard they don’t accept transfer AP credit, but I think it might speak to my academic abilities). Thanks!

@Jane, I don’t really believe in “chance” threads, but I will say that you are a very competitive candidate!

Its all about how you represent yourself, and how you much of a “fit” you will be in the community.

What major are you?

@NEU2NU Thanks for doing the chance anyway.

Right now I’m a biology major, but I want to change to biochem. I’m just worried about letters of recommendation since all my sciences classes have been large lectures.

This school is my dream school in the worst way. I’m so frickin’ in love with this place. I’m sure you all feel exactly the same, though, haha. I just wish I wasn’t asking for financial aid.

I feel the same way. I also felt the same way about the school i want to transfer out of lol.

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the SAT in order for it to get to Brown in time. I’m still debating on whether or not to retake it…

I currently have a 3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science. I am applying for a Political Science. I also have internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia. I am a researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests. I am also the head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB. I was also a part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation. There are other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 30.

What are my chances like? How do I stand in comparison to others?

@lookingaround-i think you can still take the SAT in january and possibly march (if you don’t mind sending in your scores a little late); the regular deadline for the january SAT is december 23, so you still have some time to decide.

Ohh I just saw the extension on the website. Sweet. I almost panicked when I realized it was midnight and I hadn’t signed up yet. I’ve been so busy with finals I haven’t had to time to think about it.

Hey! I’m a Smith College freshman considering transferring to Brown. I had a 3.8 gpa from a college prep school for high school and am expecting a 3.7 for my first semester at Smith. I was just wondering what my chances look like with out my ACT scores. I’m probably retaking the ACT (got a 29) because Smith didn’t require it.

Hi! I’m a freshman at Wash U. in St. Louis considering maybe transferring to Brown (or Northwestern). I have 3.92 GPA from high school and 4.0 for my first semester at Wash U. I’m still unsure whether I’m absolutely gonna transfer. But I just thought “I won’t be losing anything really even if i apply and got denied.” So, just gonna give it a shot.

I wonder what my chances are at Brown

I’m a sophomore in college.
spent first year at a Tier 1 Liberal Arts school in NY. (3.6 GPA)
and am currently at my local community college for financial reasons (first semester GPA- 3.9)

SAT scores are 1900/2400, not great, but that was 2 years ago, I’m sure if I retook them and studied I’d be in the 2200 range, but whats the point, thats petty HS stuff imo.

Good ECs, Great Essays, Great Recommendations, Minority Status and I’m taking 3 SAT Subject Tests in January b/c I never took any in HS.

don’t think you can really “chance” Brown…it’s definitely a crap shot. Last year, 972 kids applied and 117 were accepted, and 76 decided to attend. so…it really depends. i mean when you look at the numbers, they did accept a lot of students (more than 100). so…

So about the essays, is it appropriate to tailor our common app essay specifically to Brown? I would really like to, though on the common app it says it should be general. I found that there is a way to send different essays to different schools though, and I’m wondering whether this could be positive for me or if it would instead reflect negatively on me for not following the directions or something. What do you think?

@arcadefire: didn’t you apply last year? if i recall correctly. I could be wrong though.
that’s my problem too…I’m trying to find somethings that I hate about Wash U in general (instead of compare to Brown)…it’s kinda hard…

Yep I applied last year. Since then though, I retook the SAT’s and improved my score by 360 and have gotten straight A’s and A+'s in all classes, so I think my shot is much better. I still have questions because…I obviously didn’t do everything right last year, haha. I treated Brown like an after-thought last year, but this year it’s my main focus (and top choice).
