The problem is that when you apply as a soph transfer you will have only completed 1 semester of college, therefore B will assess you mainly on your HS record (gpa and rigor of coursework) and test scores. In addition, a look at Bs Common Data Set will show that while the fr admissions rate has hoovered slightly under 14% (higher for ED??) over the past 3 years, transfer rates have fluctuated from 3-12%, depending on the availability of spaces:

The one thing that might be in your favor is that since you applied ED, it sounds like you might be able to afford full pay, and B is need-aware for transfers.

p.s. If you request it right now, B will hold on to your fr packet so that you won’t have to send in everything again as a transfer applicant.

If I request transfer information now you mean, they’ll hold my information?
Even if I’m still in high school?

Well I’m not in dire need, but I do need to apply for some financial aid- I wouldn’t really get much Brown if I was already accepted, though. I have to do loans, but I’m not as needy as other students so I guess that’s a plus.
(like a bit past 100,000)

Three years ago my D1 applied as a fr and the following year as a transfer. She didn’t decide that she wanted to transfer until the winter and when she called B told her that if she had requested them to hold her materials in the preceding spring (just after decisions), they would have held on to everything, but that by that time, everything had been dumped.

Unfortunately, B is both need-aware and has limited FA for transfers.

How much aid does Brown usually give ,if any, to transfers? I haven’t turned in my application yet or the fee because I’m still hesitant on the fact that if I do get in, I may not be able to afford it. I don’t want to really waste $75 either for the application fee because of that…

Knowing how much they gave to other transfer students is unlikely to give you a good idea of what you will receive, as it’s based on two factors that may be very different from case to case: the financial situation of the family (eg. earnings, assets, number in college, etc.) and how much B finds the applicant a desirable candidate (preferred packaging).

Anybody know the housing situation for transfer students? Do you just get stuck anywhere? Or do you get put with other transfers? Do you get housing at all?

I was just wondering if anyone knows how important your course load is to Brown?

Last semester I took 20 credit hours at a CC (financial accounting, macro econ, history of western civilization, computer information systems, cultural anthropology, and honors psychology). This semester I am taking 23 credit hours in some less challenging courses (film, theater, managerial accounting, bio, honors astronomy, honors english, and honors humanities), but I guess what I am trying to ask is do I have a chance with an improved course load, or does it simply not matter because these classes aren’t as difficult per say physics 2 or calc 3.

I am applying as a junior transfer and a psych major.

All I can say is they’ll look at it in context. It would be more impressive to get good grades in a tough course load than in an easy course load. However, I don’t think “course rigor” is nearly as important for transfers as it was in high school.

Hey what do you guys think about this situation:

I had to get a mid-term grade report for another school I’m applying to. My GPA for this midterm comes out to slightly lower than the GPA I’m applying with (3.96 vs 3.85). However, my classes this quarter are also definitely my hardest yet (all tough engineering classes) so I’m thinking a 3.85 may still look good. I’ve also been balancing them with a new job, which I might mention on an attached letter. I’m applying for junior transfer but with bad high school stats, so I’m also thinking it might be good to send this just for more evidence that I’ve improved since high school. What do you guys think? Should I send it? Or should I not since the grades on it are slightly worse?

College: University of British Columbia at Vancouver, Canada (Freshman)

Program: Coordinated Science Program (available for 167 students with first come first serve policy during course registration; course registration time based on high school GPA: earliest one with highest GPA)

GPA: 91% A+ average (No 4.0 scale GPA here, over 90% = A+)

Rec: The one from physics prof. should be strong since I got highest in his section (94%)

Don’t know about the other from math prof., a graduate from U-Chicago and taught 3 years there

SAT: total failure…

High school:

a public high school with an special art program
Average: about 90% don’t remember (it’s really low cuz ppl. with 70-80% in UBC usually got 95+ in high school; hopefully this shows some personal growth?)

EC:
Varsity basketball in high school
Varsity swim; 3rd and 4th in municipal meet and 7th in provincial meet

Student government and co-founder of a special interest group before immigrating to Canada (grade 10 in China)

Other:
decent portfolio demonstrating art skill (drawings, paintings, architectural models and photographs) but I guess Brown does not actually accept this for transfer app.
