Hey guys, just wanted to start a thread specifically for the Program in Liberal Medical Education applicants… please list decision and your stats (only if you wish, but remember it could help others wishing to apply in future)… and also if you are accepted, please tell us if you definitely plan on attending PLME, or are perhaps still deciding, or whatever else

I will start off

Rejected
1500, 800 math2c, 760 chem and writing, 4.0 UW, ranked 1/320
Essays - spent most time on Brown app and the essays, thought I wrote some of my best work, and I thought it reflected on my beliefs and projected who I was as a person… but i guess the Brown adcoms didn’t like it as much as i’d hoped
Recs - good i think
Interview - pretty good, the guy i got was well known among the alumni association supposedly and said he’d write a good recommendation

if i had gotten in, brown plme woulda been a top choice even if i got into northwestern’s hpme, it probably would have come down to those 2… and i’d probably choose brown plme over any other ivy

mistaippa....I'm in pretty much the same boat as you are. I spent so much time on those essays....and if I say so myself, thought they were pretty good!

I was accepted. I'll post my stats on the decisions thread. As for the essays, I had some really solid, personal reasons for wanting to become a doctor, so that was probably what got me in.

I was completely surprised that I got in. My SATs were only mediocre. I think being from a rural Alaska community helped my chances. I've spent many years (actually about three, pardon the hyperbole) working in hospitals and with patients so I think that helped my chances. I'd really like to hear from other people who got into the PLME.

If you click on the ADOCH link and then get the brochure (the full schedule isn't up, but you can access the brochure), there's a PLME reception scheduled. I think it's at noon on the 20th.

Accepted....and my stats aren't as good as most. I have an aversion for standardized test...oh how I loathe the SAT. That's why I'm going to HPME...no MCAT (death averted).
1420 SATI
720 Chem
700 Writing
700 Math IIC
2/300 rank
I wrote as candidly as I possible could in my Brown essays; I'd say I expressed raw energy/passion. The Brown app was the last one I did and I was sooo burned out by that point that I skipped one essay; I'd be majoring in Biochemistry, and there was an extra essay for ppl majoring in chemistry/engineering/etc, and I rationalized that biochem wasn't chemistry so I didn't do that one. heeee, so I thought for sure i'd get reject from PLME as well as Brown, but I didn't...yay..

Hey Lunknot, it was my understanding that you don't need to worry about MCATs when you're in the PLME. Isn't that correct? The only stipulation for guaranteed med school entrance is the maintence of a 3.0 GPA right?

Thanks, I'm attending the PLME this fall so it'd be really helpful to know.
Gratsi--Rory

Probably HPME since it's the better med school...better residency placement, more recognized and established, etc. Undergrad isn't too shabby either.

Do you have to take MCAT's at NW? What's the minimum? Since your SAT's are good but not spectacular, meeting the MCAT req't might require a significant amount of studying on your part. Of course, Brown doesn't have the MCAT req't at all.

If you really like Brown undergrad, then you should consider going here. If it doesn't particularly strike you, then HPME might be better.

Wow, Congradulations Linknot, that's so great how you got into both the HPME and PLME. To be honest, I've never even heard of Northwestern's program. On a stupid (silly?) note, ask yourself: what would you rather be known for-- being in the Huhpeemee or the pleemee? I think Pleemee sounds better. Seriously though, Brown is in a fabulous location, has innumerable opportunities, and is a nice small group of really diverse people. I hope to see ya next year as my classmate! I'm in love with Brown man (or, maybe ur a woman I dunno?)

As a PLME, I can say that brown's residency placement kills northwestern's - we send around 1/3 of the class to harvard/hopkins/columbia/cornell/ucsf. Brown med is small, and is certainly not a research powerhouse like some other larger universities (although ruth simmons is trying to change that). The PLME has a very different philosophy than HPME, which seems more like a factory program to spit out young doctors. The PLME has a focus on the liberal arts and has a curriculum designed to create humanist doctors. (more info on the plme website.) That being said, I am no HPME expert; i didn't even know about it when applying. Almost all of the PLMEs in my advising group applied solely to brown/brown med, and didn't even think/know much about other programs.

A side note - when i was in chicago a few years ago, i was walking in the downtown area and stumbled across northwestern's medical school. What an incredible location! Providence can't even compare...
