Brown PLME Decisions/Stats

<a href="http://bms.brown.edu/students/matchlist05/%5B/url%5D">http://bms.brown.edu/students/matchlist05/</a></p>

plme website - <a href="http://bms.brown.edu/plme/%5B/url%5D">http://bms.brown.edu/plme/</a></p>

Does anyone know the percentage of PLME students accepted for the Class of 2009? I know like 1500 were accepted--but the %?

1500 plme accepted? No way.

1536 applied, about 100 are accepted each year.

edit: someone was asking about residency match lists....here's the one for 2005 at NW's Feinberg:

<a href="http://www.infoplex.northwestern.edu/class/alumni/match/2005/2005_By_Location.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.infoplex.northwestern.edu/class/alumni/match/2005/2005_By_Location.pdf</a></p>

And after looking at that list, I would retract my previous statement and probably conclude that PLME matches just as well if not better than Feinberg. That's odd, because Feinberg is generally considered the "better" medical school, at least from what I've heard.

For those interested, you can find a complete list of residency matches for all medical schools on the pre-med forums at studentdoctor.net.

lot of harvard affiliated residencies for brown

I have a quick question for you PLME application veterans. When they ask to create a potential program of study..do they want a full out chart detailing particular courses over my eight years or do they want a generalized explanation? Thanks

i did a generalized explanation and several others did too

thanks! one last question....did you use the PLME website's academuc handbooks?

Brown PLME or Pittburgh’s Medical Guarantee Program???

I don’t know how to decide…PLZ HELP!!!

Brown is by far a much much better undergrad but Pittsburgh is a great place for research and it’s med school is ranked 14th and still climbing up in rankings…

Does anyone know where I can find the link for pittsburgh’s residency match list?

which has better matchings…Brown or Pittsburgh???

Any advice on this subject would be wonderful

My opinion is choose the place you want to be for the next 8 years, not just for the final four.

As clearly demonstrated in this thread, Brown’s residency matches show that our school here is highly underrated and you’re not going to find yourself being held back at Brown’s program. So the question becomes, where do I want to be for the next 8 years?

As a current PLME, I think I ought to add some factual tidbits that might sway your opinions.

PLME has it’s own “endowment” which grants its students MANY privileges that many other programs don’t have. One is their Summer Research Assistantship program, which gives you $3000 to do on-campus research in academic medicine OR emergency medicine over the summer. It’s through a competitive application only available to PLMEs, but it’s not terribly hard to get (~2/3 applicants get the grant). I was able to obtain this grant to work on my own independent research project with the professor who wrote our intro neuroscience textbook… as a freshman.

If you want to study abroad, PLME pays for you as well. There are a select number of medical schools in China, Taiwan, and Israel at which you can study over the summer (you can do this as an undergrad or med student), and your tuition is fully covered for that summer. There isn’t even a competitive application for these programs; you just sign up. The amazing thing about this program is that, even as an undergrad, you are essentially a learning medical student at these foreign medical schools.

So, if you really want to get your money’s worth for your tuition, PLME is the way to go. ;)

How hard is it to get financial aid to PLME? What is the cutoff for family income for financial aid?

I am not in the med field but even I know not all residency specialties are equal. To look at only school names without considering the specialties is like treating Harvard School of Govt and Harvard School of Biz the same thing when the former is a lot easier to get into. If one looks at the most recent match list from Brown, one would notice the complete absence of radiation oncology and overrepresentation of psychiatry and pediatrics. USN ranking actually has ratings from residency directors; Feinberg students are rated significantly higher in that category.

Did the Brown Alumni interviewers know much about the PLME program? And as a candidate who applied RD to Brown and PLME is there a way I can update the PLME decision-makers on recent accomplishments and awards, or just go through regular undergraduate admissions office?

The interviewers really vary depending on who you get. My interviewer happened to be a former PLME, so that was really nice. But your territory may not have as many people who know about PLME.

You can update the PLME admissions people by going through the regular office - they’ll share all information over.

i would pick plme over hpme because even if you enroll in the PLME, you aren’t forced to attend Brown’s medical school, so it doesn’t matter that Northwestern’s (Feinberg) is better. The only caveat is that a spot won’t be held for you at Brown’s Alpert Medical School

@abiapples1 but I’m guessing you’re frowned upon by the faculty if you apply out to a high ranking med school, right?
