Hey everyone, long story short, I’ve done some substantial digging around about Brown’s RUE program and it seems like a perfect fit for me. A bit of background on myself, I’ve been in the Navy for a little over 4 years- I’m a submarine “nuke” reactor operator and also qualified as a diver. Had a 90 GPA from what I remember in high school and a 2060 SAT. I have 9 college credits I earned while in high school, and any earned from Navy Nuclear Power School that Brown would accept.
I’m starting this thread because I can’t find much, if any, substantial information online about what kind of applicants/veterans Brown accepts for RUE, or how their interview process works. I am fortunate enough to be in the position where money will NOT be an issue whenever I return to school, and I’ll be able to cover what Post-9/11 or Yellow Ribbon doesn’t cover with ease.
So essentially, if anyone has any input on their experience applying for/attending Brown through this program, it would be greatly appreciated. I still have a substantial amount of time before I leave the military, but I have a goal in earning a history degree (Brown’s archaeology program is especially enticing) and I’m the kind of person who gets all his ducks in a row before going about doing something. Thanks!
It’s such a small program that I’m not sure you could characterize exactly what type of person Brown accepts to RUE. All the RUE students that I met during my time at Brown had very different stories, with the one unifying factor their desire to go back to college and get a degree. Sounds like you’re definitely the right type of student - I wish you the best of luck!
I’m a 12 year Navy guy getting out and applying to RUE for geophysics. Did you reach out to Browns veteran program at all or use programs like Service to School? I used both resources and they were immensely helpful. They were able to provide tons of feedback, and helped the entire way through the process. Not like it matters at this point, applications are due tomorrow.
@ejames16 fellow prospective RUE applicant. My interview is tomorrow, have you had your yet? Best of luck! I hope we both get in. Have you been able to gather any more information on admitted students and what their stats looked like?
Had my interview! It was fantastic. He was so down to earth and relaxed. I loved that he didn’t sugar-coat anything. He said we should all be hearing back “really soon.” Someone else was told by their interviewer yesterday that it will take about a week to hear back.
My interview questions from what I can remember were as follows:
What branch of the service were you in?
What was your MOS?
Why Brown?
Why do you want to major in this concentration?
Then asked me what my take was on a major issue in the world right now.
What will you do at Brown outside of academics?
How will you react if another student in your class is extremely anti-military?
Do you have any questions for me?
Then we just talked for almost 45 minutes about all things Brown
