Brown Student Advantage Card -students & parents

Can any current students/Brown parents tell me if they bought/found the student advantage card a great deal? It’s the card that gives discounts off places such as Target, Greyhound, and Amtrak.

I am particularly interested in it for the discount on amtrak. I was wondering if you should take amtrak from Brown to the Boston Logan airport since I’m looking at flying into and from the Logan airport to home. What’s the best way to get to the Logan airport?

Bottomline Q: Should I get the card or not?

I just finished up my first year, and with all the Amtrak and Greyhound discounts I got going back to NY, the card has already paid itself off. Even though PVD to Boston isn’t as expensive of a trip as PVD to NY, it’ll pay itself off eventually. You can also use it in places that might be around your home in CA!

This is the opinion of someone under different circumstances from your own, but I say go for it.

The best way to get from Brown to Logan airport and back is definitely the commuter rail. It’s not Amtrak-- it’s a different train, and it costs only $7.75 each way.

Brown to the Providence train station (same train station for Amtrak and the commuter rail) is either a 20 minute hilly walk, or a ~$5 cab ride.

Then you can easily take the subway from the Boston train station to the airport ($2).

I’m also from CA, and I always fly into Logan (nonstop from SFO! :D) and then take the commuter rail, which has worked well for me. (However I don’t know much about the Student Advantage Card.)

We bought the Student Advantage Discount Card at the beginning of D’s first year and it definitely is worth the cost. She has saved money on Greyhound, Amtrak, and other things. We shelled out $50 for all four years, which amortized to being worth the cost, even after only two years. It’s not only a Brown Discount, but is a Student Advantage program. Colleges probably use it with their names all over the country!

I’m in the Bay Area as well and plan to fly from SFO or San Jose to Logan. I was wondering what airline you use? Recommendations on the different airlines, prices, etc?

Thanks!

I’ve been satisfied with United and JetBlue. They usually have nonstop flights for about $100 each way. Virgin America also offers nonstop SFO to Logan. I’ve never flown with them, although I’ve heard good things from friends (in terms of price and quality).
