Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

@ap012199 Mine’s over skype actually, so nope!

@ap012199 I had brought my resume to my interview but my interviewer told me that Brown instructed them to not look at resumes or anything related to scores. You can always bring yours just in case your interviewer prefers to have them!

@ap012199 my interviewer emailed me to bring my CV, so I would your resume just in case

Has any international applicants done an interview or got assigned to one?

I had my interview (in New York City) last Sunday, and I didn’t have to bring/prepare anything for it besides myself. Like the guy was really chill - all he had about me was my concentration interests, my categories of extracurricular interests (i think the headers of the interests we put in the common app activity section – not the activities themselves though), and my basic demographic info. We just had a pretty normal conversation, although he structured it around some sample questions. He did ask about a moment when I’ve experienced some sort of failure in high school, which I managed to handle pretty well, but it might be worth thinking about beforehand. Oh and it was like 40 min and he asked me if i had any questions at the end.

@dt8050 not yet.

@ap012199 I submitted my super score (both of my ACTs) because it does give the fullest representation of your capabilities

thanks @njk345 !

I had my interview 2 days ago and it was pretty good. I brought my resume, which he first said he would take a look at towards the end, then he said he didn’t want to be biased because the interview report isn’t supposed to be about test scores and classes etc. But in the end he took it (he felt bad for not taking it), though I’m sure he won’t include anything from it in his report.

It was a fairly normal conversation, though he sure loved to talk so I actually didn’t get to say everything about me that I wanted him to know. He started out by telling me about himself, and then he asked me why I had decided to apply to Brown ED. We talked about that for a while (the school’s atmosphere, the people, open curriculum), and then he asked me what my second choice was if I didn’t get into Brown (I thought that was kinda weird so I tried to side-step it, just told him Amherst was my top until I visited Brown). He told me a lot about his and his daughter’s experiences at Brown, and he wanted me to ask him lots of questions, so I did. It was fairly unstructured besides those first two questions.

Something interesting he told me was that usually ED is for recruited athletes (something I had heard before but didn’t actually think was true), but that Brown is trying to recruit women in STEM, so those people will have higher chances of getting accepted.

He also said that about 1/3 of the apps get tossed after a quick skim (scores just aren’t high enough), and then the rest usually get at least 2 readers. The interview report is rarely significant, but if they read an app that they don’t think is anything special, but the report is excellent, they will review it again or give it to someone else.
He admitted that if a school has lots of students who are accepted to Brown and don’t go, they can be less inclined to accept people from that school.

Hope this helps!

Also, his daughter applied ED, was deferred, and then got in regular. She’s there now and loves it. He said this as a confidence booster, which now I’m thinking he must have thought I would need (he didn’t tell me I was a great fit, and I know others have said their interviewers told them that. But we also didn’t talk about enough for him to draw any real conclusion, I think, since he didn’t let me talk a whole lot lol).
It lasted about an hour and 20 min.

I started to panic when you said that 1/3 of the apps get tossed and the scores aren’t high enough :open_mouth:

I’m guessing the “cutoff” scores for Brown would be around 30/2000/1400 for an unhooked applicant, but Brown is one of the most holistic top-tier schools, so you never know.

@ricka8 he didn’t tell you what the cutoffs were, right?

@ap012199 No, I would have loved to know though! I think he meant GPA and school grades as well though, not just test scores. They don’t just look at the scores and toss your application aside, though. They do look at the whole thing (or at least skim it), so I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

how/when were you guys contacted for interviews?

why would they be recruiting women in STEM? it’s not like there’s a scarcity of those applying to Brown. I’m guessing this “recruitment” excludes Asian (or even white) women?

@ala1001 They will likely contact you via email, phone call, or text (my interviewer used this medium). It is nearly impossible to provide every applicant an interview, but as long as you check these regularly you very likely will be contacted for an interview, which can be in-person, over the phone, or Skype.

The reason some interviews take place sooner than others is because some alumni area chairs are more “on the ball” than others and the interviewers are busy people. Don’t stress about it too much, but if it really bothers you maybe email admissions. I feel like this would bug them but it is up to you.

The interviewer told me that I would have the women in STEM advantage even applying as a cognitive neuroscience/psychology major. I have no clue if it is a real advantage though, since I didn’t think schools like Brown still have a lack of women in STEM.
Anyone else know?

@ricka8 if you don’t mind me asking, what race are you? You may have more of an advantage if you are a WOC since generally speaking, there is a lack of WOC in STEM. I hope it is true though! (I applied as a chemistry major)

^^ i also hope this is true

Hi, does anyone know if it’s common for applicants to upload research papers on the Brown portal as a supplementary material? I uploaded my entire research paper from last year but now I am thinking of removing it and just uploading a one page abstract.
