So how is the program?

Movinmom-from a parent's view, too early to tell yet. My daughter is having quite a lot of reading, which is good, but I don't think her course is what she thought it would be. My big complaint so far is that they scheduled her class late in the afternoon (after 3) for three hours and so she misses most of the organized activities, lectures, etc. because she is in class. Also they favor the older kids on the trips by giving them preference if there is overcrowding so younger kids get left out of those too. Anyway, verdict is out about whether I am going to feel that she got what I paid for on this one.

I haven't heard too much from my D. Her class is in the a.m. and she seems to have a fair amount of writing/home work. Not sure of much else though and was just wondering what others were hearing.

I just remembered this thread, leaving Sunday to check in Sunday (whoot NJ I see theres a bunch of other 2 weekers from Jersey too that posted) and thanks to everyone there already that posted, it's great to read about the program, it sounds like it will be a lot of fun and a great expierence.

Anyone else here arriving Sunday?

alluringcliche, I'm arriving Sunday too!
what course are you taking?

also, does anyone know if we should bring laptops or bikes?

JQ- My daughter says her teacher is communicating with the class quite a bit by e-mail, so a laptop is a good idea if you can take one. Her dorm is also a long way from her class--if you don't like walking, a bike may be a good idea!

Cool! I'm taking "Beauty Writing and Aesthetics". What about you?

The website says both of those are useful but not required. Personally I'm not bringing either because it's just too much to bring on a three hour drive and I don't have a laptop in the first place.

I'm taking that course too!! haha lets be friends!

I'm thinking that I'm not going to bring a bike because it'll be hard for it to fit in my car, but does anyone know if we get internet connection for laptops in our rooms?

That's a coincidence! Lol, I'm Beth, what's your name and where are you coming from? It sounds like a cool course with films and stuff and I like to write and am planning to take AP English so yeah.

I think there is a connection. Yeah it says (http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Continuing_Studies/pc/admitted/computing.php) there is but they won't help you set it up or anything.

My name's Julie and I'm coming from New York. I'm taking the course because English is my weakest subject and this course seems like it would help me a lot and it sounds pretty interesting.

Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow!!

Yeah so we live kinda close too. Maybe I'll see you on the highway up, haha. Yeah I'm sure it will help you, and it does sound interesting. But hopefully we don't get TOO much work. See you tommorow, maybe! Or later definetely I guess, anyone know how big the classes are?

coincidence? LIsa (Triggy100)(page 10 of discussion) and I (cybercheesecake) are roommates! LoL.

Hi Lisa!

small world.

That's sooo cool! Have fun!

2 more weeks for me! Hate being in the last session!

THose of you are there - how are you enjoying it? Is there a lot of homework? is there much to do when you are not studying? are the students from all over or primarily new england?

okay, I KNOW some of you orginal posters are back from your amazing time at Brown. I'm STILL not there yet (1 more cursed week to go) and I'd LOVE to hear how it was!

I have a question.

I really want to do Summer@Brown next summer, but on my college app, is it going to look like just one of those things rich kids do? In a nutshell, is it in any way going to influence my college app (for good or bad)? Coz I live in India, and if I attend, I'll be missing school. So parents are only going to let me attend if it influences my college app for the better. Please help!

I don't think it's worth it unless you're going for your OWN personal benefit and not your parents or college. In fact, this tenet generally applies to most top-tier university college programs. It's very expensive and it's easy to get into, so it's not really going to boost your apps much unless you're getting college credit, which, really, you could get for much less at your home university. If you do decide to go, it should be because you want a new experience and because you want to have fun learning and meeting new people and challenging yourself.
