Brown University

bumppppppppppppppppppppppppp

ineedhelp -- my guess is that you are expected to pay for your own textbook. Most summer programs for credit are like that. you have a few choices to make it less expensive. Contact the professor via email for the classes you are enrolling in (you should be able to get the email address off the brown site or by calling them). Ask for the title and ISBN# of the textbooks that are required for the course. Then, check around and buy them used off the internet and bring them up with you -- it is much cheaper that way. You can also call the Brown bookstore and ask them if they have the titles for summer textbooks yet and how much the book will be. science, math and engineering textbooks are by far the most expensive -- so your cost will depend on the class you are taking.

oh
well i am taking
political science - recent global strife
and cultural. anthropology?
by the way
is your son going on the oxford program?

i signed up for studio art and understanding radical islam.

the professors' emails aren't on the website

try calling the summer program office and asking them for the textbooks or the professors email, otherwise call the bookstore. It might be a little early -- professors usually finalize their books about a month or two before the class starts

Elisaveta_Koriouchkina@brown.edu -- I believe this is the email of your cultural anthropology teacher (did a search with her name and "Brown" -- she is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Brown)

I couldn't find an email for your other professor.

As far as the oxbridge program -- yes, he wants to go to England and study at Cambridge (although he was also thrilled with the oppportunity to study at Brown). It was a hard choice -- but I think the idea of seeing England was a big factor.

Anyone going to Brown this Summer (2007) taking Introduction to Physiology and the Brain courses?

To all those wondering if its too late, I would say the answer is no. They don't have a fixed deadline (or at least they didn't when i applied last year) but be advised that good courses fill up quickly. I applied relatively late and was accepted into my backup program because my first choice was really popular.

As to the textbook question, you will buy your own no matter if the class is a minicourse or for credit. The Brown Bookstore has new and used copies of the books for the most part. Prices are very dependent on the course. I took biomedical research and paid 45 for a new DNA text, but my roommate took Psychology and paid 160 for new books, like I said its all variable.

Finally, to those asking about being Residential, everyone in the program is pretty much residential (just like being an undergrad). I knew one girl who lived in Rhode Island who was a commuter but thats it. Honestly, I got a lot out of the course, but what stayed with me more was the time I spent on Brown's campus getting to know people on my floor and all over the place.

Summer@Brown is an amazing time (expect it to be hot, though). Despite the fact that I felt like my skin was melting off at times, it definitely made Brown my Number 1. You'll have an awesome time! Congrats to all those accepted!

For those who have applied- Did you really get a reply in 10 days? And for those who have gone- what are the odds a course will get cancelled? The ones I'm applying for are really odd/random (aren't they all?) and I've really fallen in love with my first choice, but i have this feeling that it will get cancelled because no one will apply! Do they still hold course with only 4 or 5, or another small number of people? And how large are typical classes?

I applied the 28th and still haven't gotten a response.

i applied
around february 9th
got the results.
10 days later around
february 21st. it was by email
then.
a week later they sent home this package of information
is there a such thing
as sharing books?
like you and ur roommates or classmates
pitch in money to buy the books, use it together, then at teh end of the program, sell it back to the bookstore?

Princessbell -- which course did you apply for, if you don't mind my asking?

I applied about a week/week and a half ago, and haven't heard anything yet. My first choice was the cryptology course, but I'm really afraid not enough people will sign up for that! >.< My backup is Intro to Game Theory, but Cryptology sounds like so much fun... I took a short cryptology course a few years ago and had a ton of fun, so I'm really hoping it works out!

ok is anyone taking an airplane there or am i the only one?

i'm starting to get nervous...it's been almost 2 weeks. does this mean i didn't get in?

Triggy: Oh, I'm in the process of getting things together- today I gave my favorite teacher the recommendation form and put in for a transcript request. I should have it mailed by Saturday hopefully, but probably not-my school is sooo slow!

Anyway, I'm already doing a 5-week theatre program, so many of my favorite choices are during the times when I can't go. But luckily, my VERY favorite- Existentialist Questions of the Heart:What Is Love and How Can I Find Myself (isn't that the worst name for the best topic? lol)-is during a time that I can go. But the thing is, that one is only 1 week, and I have a strong feeling I will be very sad if I only spend one week at Brown and have to leave. I would also love Unlocking the Writers' Voice: Personal History and Solo Performance, which is 2 weeks and combines my 2 favorite things-writing and acting, but then I wouldn't get that deep intellectual stimulation that I know a Brown Philosophy course will give me. So I'm really in a quandary right now, but I'll have to decide by the end of this week!!!!

Wow that was long.

Redwood: Not to worry, if I go, I will def. take a plane-I'm in DC so technically I could just take a train, but I'm going to be late (I have a performance the day the class starts) so I want to rush up as quickly as possible! I've never been on a plane alone before, but it should be a piece of cake.

Comptined: I'm sure if you didn't get in, they would still send you a rejection response. Anyway, you probably did. They most likely think that you're the most amazing applicant they've ever seen and want to photocopy and frame your application. That's what's taking so long...I've heard their copy machines are old...:)

Good luck everyone!

Accepted!! =) My application was completed on March 6, and I heard back today, March 14 (Pi day!), so it took 8 days in my case.

Does anyone know when we find out if the class we signed up for will be happening (if there's enough interest for them to have the course)?

lol
just pay for the fees
and they'll notify u
early, mid may
hey did u apply
for the deans scholarship?

i got in! yay! took 14 days for me.

ineedhelp -- haha thanks! I'm anxiousss. Ohhh me and my woes.

And no, I didn't apply for the Deans Scholarship (that's the financial aid $$ right?).
