Click on "enter as guest" and then click on college lookup. When you see Brown, click on the graph option, and you will see all the kids from our magnet high school who got admitted, rejected and waitlisted by SAT and GPA. No one got into Brown with less than a 4.5 Weighted average and 1500. In fact, out of the 20+ kids that applied to Brown, no one got in with less than 4.6 and 1520. Check out the URL. This shows actual statistics for admission and rejection. It is very illuminating. Maybe our high school was unlucky.

Rabokarabekian, a whole high school as fake and impassionate? You are kidding? We have two magnet programs there. Kids don't join these programs unless they are highly motivated.

I will tell you what I think the reason really is. Our high school is 40% asian. Maybe, this is a "reverse discrimination" against kids from our high school. Maybe Brown gets too many asian applicants and thus makes it harder on asians.

whoa, just noticed I was mentioned here... ND's the most underrepresented state. Brown's viewbook said that there were two people currently attending in the classes of '05-'08. I know who the '08er is, I talked to her once, but I have no idea who the other one is. And of course I'm '09... I like to hope there were other reasons I was accepted as well, but for once I was happy to be from North Dakota. :)

Oh, and I was mad depressed when Daschle lost :( Ah well, North Dakota can send their 3 electoral votes to the Republicans just as long as they keep electing Democrats to congress. Did you all hear about the drilling in ANWR getting approved on like a 51-49? How sad...

Hey taxguy, relax! I was alluding to a different thread where posters were saying that adcoms had told their schools that they were fake. If they discriminate against asians, then don't mark your ethnicity. It's not really a complicated decision. And don't assume everyone in a magnet program is motivated. Their parents might be motivated, or they might think they're motivated, but they might just be going with the expected Asian flow.

Rabokarabakian, Yes, there is some truth in what you state. However, these kids are, for the most part, very motivated. I would recommend everyone to go to the post url that I have posted above and check out other school admission's statistics. Our school might night be representative of the world, but this site will give you some expectation of what the SAT and GPA requirements are for most top schools.

By the way, you note that,"If they discriminate against asians, then don't mark your ethnicity." However, it is hard to hide your ethnicity if your last name is Chin, Chang, Wong etc.

Frankly, it is rather idiotic for a school to limit enrollment from a particular school or from a particular racial, ethnic, religious group, but it seems to be the way of life at many top schools under the guise of "diversity."

Well I can see geographic diversity much more than racial diversity. I mean, if you have 5,000 applicants from the same city with 4.0s and 1600s, obviously you can't admit them all, even if they are all qualified. I think geographic diversity also ensures a better mix of ideas and traditions than race too. I'm Asian American, but I can't say I have any more "culture" than anyone else, except maybe I eat rice at least once a day. Anyway. You're right about the last name thing, but I think I have enough faith that if they see you haven't marked you're enthicity, the adcoms will make an effort not to notice it, just like if it's a need-blind school and they see your father is unemployed and your mother's a gas station attendant, they won't mentally mark you down because they know you'll need fin aid. I hope they don't anyway.

I find it funny that a lot of what people are considering the bare minumum SAT scores are significantly higher than the actual Average SAT score.

hmm... my essay didnt even mention them or anything about college
it was just a nice little (understatement) story. i actually loved the brown app out of all of the others, i think it was the different color pages, hehe. my sats were not that high, 1200, but i turned in ACT score of 29. oh well... none of that matters now though, cause im in. but i loved brown, and i geuss it came across in the engineering supplement essays.

yeah i dont wanna go back into the wootton-bashing but i have said it several times, the people that go to wootton are not similar to the people at brown. While i dont like to generalize, a large proportion of them are spoiled and just rich. Once again i dont go to that school, but comparing it to the kids from my school (which also doesnt do that well with brown... could be a MoCo thing), a lot of the smarter kids are not that genuine and are more motivated by their psycho parents than anything else. While i realize there are many and many exceptions, i have found it to be true in too many cases.

The high asian population must also hurt the school because even though i would appear racist to say this, most schools get plenty of asian kids tallented in music, math and science and driven/motivated by their parents. This i can say from personal experience as an asian girl i know (goes to my school) was told by her dad that since shes not goint to an Ivy League school, he will never put a UMD sticker on his Benz.
