My good friend that goes to UCLA is home for spring break, and since I'm considering UCLA as one of my top choices, she brought me a bunch of cool random UCLA stuff (a UCLA rubber ducky! AWESOME!).

One of the things she brought to show me was the 'Freshman Record.' It's a special yearbook just for freshmen, with photos from campus activities, dorm life, sporting events, and photos and biographies of a lot of the freshmen.

Reading it made me REALLY enthusiastic about going to UCLA. Pictures really are worth 1000 words. I was able to learn a lot more about UCLA that from reading some stuffy article.

One thing that I noticed in the photos of the UCLA freshmen was that almost EVERYONE was smiling. Browsing through my high school yearbook, most people looked bored and unhappy. My friends always get on my case for smiling in so many photos. I think it's a good sign that so many people are smiling in the UCLA yearbook; it shows happiness and confidence. I want to make new friends like THOSE.

So if any of you have the opportunity, try to pick up a copy of the 'Freshman Record.' It may give a cool look at what to expect in the year to come...

haha i didn't even know something like that existed. it's certainly not very well-publicized, cuz i haven't heard anybody talk about it in all my time here, heh.

Of course there's only pictures of students smiling and having fun. It's like a college brochure -- they want to come off as a vibrant, attractive campus.

But it's okay, I think UCLA really is a bright campus, nonetheless!

Oops, ignore that "only" part of the first sentence. I realized you said "almost everyone." Geez, it's getting late and I have to get up for school in five hours.

Yes, that is true. No one wants to look back and remember the unhappy times. I don't think I can remember a photo in my school's past yearbooks that displayed anger or sadness, and I suppose it's a part of preserving an ideal image. There's one of a guy crying, though, but it was because he really loved his mum.

I was kidding about the college brochure thing, by the way. >.<

Would the university library have this "freshman record" on file? Perhaps I shall look for it the next time I go to UCLA. Seems interesting.

Haha... maybe my high school is just really depressing or something. Only like 25% of people buy the school photos, so most just stare at the camera and don't smile because it's just going into the records (and the yearbook, which a lot of other people don't buy).
