Happy 800th Post to Self ---

-E.P.

Hahahahahah

the food is getting old... fast. my only choice for lunch at hedrick was WHITE REFINED CARBS or fatty roadkill meat

Note to self: DeNeve has the worst arrangement of any dining hall I've seen in my entire life.

I met Emmeline today!!! and uhh I was on a date with her before that without knowing... I met Namaste too.

^hopefully we convinced you to post more !

I read the threads in the CalTech and MIT forums about their experiences (pebbles and Ben Golub) and I thought it might be a good idea if I post my (general) experiences with UCLA and its surrounding area with everything from moving in, mid-terms, finals, roommates, and BruinLife to finding out who's hiding being the Joe Bruin mascot costume. Other freshmen bruins -- feel free to hijack my thread with your own general experiences. Lurkers/CCers, feel free to post questions and I'll try my best to answer them as a Bruin n00bie.

I moved in on the first day available and so far it has been good. I haven't experienced many emotions involved with the move-in process or with my actually knowing that I am at college... my "Dream School" for the record.

The first few days after moving in involved meeting some of my floormates and later my roommates (yes, I live in a triple). (I've met a new person everyday since my arrival at UCLA but that's another story.) My floor is just as dead as rumored about De Neve Plaza. RIP floor. I get along with my roommates well and we hardly see each other except in the evenings when one of us is studying or during the weekends since none of us are from SoCal (btw my floor tends to empty out during the weekend. I guess this doesn't make a difference since it's just as quiet. :p). Moving on to dorm food...

UCLA's dorm food is ranked 2nd in the nation to Cornell and for good reason. People I've spoken to have at least said it was "okay" to "omg best food of my life!!!ONEONEONE!!!!!" I've had meals mainly at De Neve Commons (which is part of the Acacia/Birch buildings of the De Neve Plaza complex) and on a daily basis there's burgers, fries, tator tots, salad, ... and on other days there's your random Asian food dish of the day. Stay away from UCLA's Asian food. It is evil... especially in the form of Rendezvous's "Chinese Chicken Salad" although I've heard that their Mexican food isn't that bad. And people do eat alone and it's not a big deal. Enough about dorm food/eating... Moving on to socializing...

It's hard not to find someone similar to you at UCLA. There are so many different types of people. Yeah, it's easy to get lost in the NorCal vs. SoCal thing (hella vs. like .. HYPHY BLAHBLAH) and it's easy to get turned off by the cliques that had endured high school and are alive in college. I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't the only one not knowing ANYONE in college but I soon got over that. I haven't found my FACEBOOK/BEST FRIENDS FOREVER yet  but I've managed to find people I can relate to (and no not for just a sense of social security in being around others or whatever or hopefully not). Moving on to workload...

I'm a South Campus major and I'm taking two heavily Pre-Med classes within my schedule. (I'll focus on these courses throughout this threadlife in fall quarter.) There are 200+ students in each of the lectures and about 20-30something students in my discussion. The typical schedule works something like this --- listen to lecture for 50 minutes and try not to snooze... everyone is silent during the lecture except during the first and last 5 minutes of class when papers rustle and binders clasp and close. Cling on to lecture note handouts and other papers during the entirety of the class while trying to stay awake (9am classes). Leave. Attend discussion once a week for 50 minutes and ask questions about problem sets or anything else... my discussions have been ending early since the work is pretty easy right now. I've managed with minimal studying since I've covered a lot of the current material with my AP courses.

More later... I'm writing in an unfocused and unstructured manner...

-E.P.

first couple weeks as a bruin:

repeating your name around 150 times a day without remembering who asked you and what their name was.
i loveeee ucla..go bruins!

ROFL... :) Yeah seriously. I'll never remember you, fellow lecture mate.

I was bored for the first 2-3 days (live in a less social part of sunset) and now I'm so loaded with classes that I don't have time to BE social.

I've stopped introducing myself to people I meet in lectures, because I know I'll never see them again lol

one of my professors has a pretty thick accent and I can't understand what he says at all. so I don't know what's the point of me going to lectures besides turning in homework and getting lecture notes o.0

but the acoustics in the lecture halls at young fascinate me :P

Weekends are emptied out. Went to a campus event yesterday. Here's the rest of my schedule:

Saturday: Studying Marathon & Problem Sets (check)
Sunday: . . .

Exams approach in approximately 2 weeks... must prepare in advance.

Side note: Mikemac's What Smart Students Know suggestion is amazingly helpful.

-E.P.

I feel the same way about one of my courses in regards to just taking lecture notes since we rely so heavily on the textbook in the course.

When are most of the lecture notes at A Level available?

10:35am. Approx 10 minutes until rush to lecture hall to secure front row seat. 1 hour break again... did some studying during allotted time. For now, posting on CC will be good enough.

I am not a procrastinator.

Time left: 5++ hours

100+ pgs of reading tonight. I smell like dining food.

Diary, 7:24 PM

Will shortly be un-procrastinating. Have designated my computer, Facebook, and CC as a cardinal sin. (At least for this night. Ahhhh!)

11:05 PM

Why the heck am I still on CC? This is a narcotic, I tell you!

To-do: GE Essay, and half of my math HW. Man, I love being a UCLA student.
