Bruin Direct

The Bruin Direct authorization form is due August 15, but I do not have a bank account yet.

My mother wanted me to wait until I was 18 (my birthday is in September) so that I could sign everything myself without parental co-signing, therefore making things much more convenient. However, this is not possible due to the deadline of the Bruin Direct authorization form.

Am I forced to get a bank account now? Am I allowed to put my mother's bank for now? Agh I should probably just call them.

same situation =(

You could get a checking account instead, I believe..but I don't know if you would have to cosign

i woudlnt worry about it unless u are getting financial aid. they only take ur money from ur account if u are getting fin aid. however u should do it soon. i believe u can set up a checking account easily.

and also Bruin Direct refers to checking account. anything else wouldnt make sense.

explain the whole bruin direct thing por favor.

hm yeah, is bruin direct mandatory if we aren't recieving and financial aid?

What is BRuin Direct?
It is the electronic deposit of BAR credit balances (refunds) directly into a personal bank account, which will allow you to have access to your money faster and more conveniently. BRUIN DIRECT may be used for checking or savings accounts at any bank or credit union in the United States. Please submit with a voided check. For more information, please visit our website: http://amco.ucla.edu

It can also put the responsibility on you to pay your school fees as scholarship money can be placed into it.

ok basically what it is, is a convenient way for UCLA to take ur money from ur account. ONLY money that is awarded to u such as fin aid, scholarship, etc can be taken from ur account. Money not related to these stay in it. U stil have the responsibility to pay for the difference of the BAR fees and credited money.

okay so if u have like $1000 fin aid. then that money is gonna be put into ur personal account. then say if fees are $2000 then UCLA automatically takes that $1000 u have in ur account and then u are responsible for the other $1000.

correct me if im wrong.

My OC said that UCLA no longer automatically draw funds from bank accounts due to the problems previously. She said that Bruin Direct is the way the university transfers excess money (after tuition and fees) from your BAR account to you.

http://www.amco.ucla.edu/bruindirfaq.htm

I understood it as you write the checks to the university while the scholarship money is in your bruin direct account, in an attempt to give you more responsibility.

lol we all have different interpetations. funny how confusing this is.

All your finaid money goes into your BAR account. UCLA takes however much you owe from that account. If you have any leftover, those funds are directly transferred into the checking account you setup with Bruin Direct.

they also take those extra funds from ur personal bank account when they need it. say 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter etc.

no they don't. It is one way only, they cannot withdraw funds from your personal checking account.

Ok but isnt bruin direct useless if I dont get financial aid or scholarships or whatever --- i still have to apply dont i?

wut if i want to pay for the food/dorm fees with a credit card, but also have university grant of $3000

the $3000 MUST be "given" to me via bruin direct? and is it possible to change the checking account from parent to yourself? b/c i dont want to open one right now with me being under 18 and all. thanks

the grant/scholarship/loan money from your eFAN will be automatically used to pay unpaid school fees first (not food/dorm, those are separate). whatever is left is sent to your checking account if you have BruinDirect.

how soon can i apply for a bruin direct account? are there any downsides to it, or do u guys recommend having one?

Well umm, it's not really an account per se. It's just basically authorization for them to deposit it into your account.

I've seen it mentioned that it was mandatory in several places. Actually, the forms are due August 15, according to the new students page.

Downsides? There's no downsides at all. They just deposit the money directly to your bank account -- that means you don't have to get a paper check from them and deposit it yourself. This is a pretty common practice by employers. It could also waive your monthly fee at the bank, heh.

You should have received a thick packet of forms and info on SHIP from the Remittance Center earlier this summer that has a form for Bruin Direct.
