Does anyone have a sense of admissions rates for boarding school for an incoming 11th grader (ie: current 10th grader)? Back in my day most went to BS in 10th grade, but some in 9th, fewer 11th, even fewer 12th. Wondering if that’s still the case, or if everyone goes as 9th graders now. And if there’s a difference East Coast versus Cali…
Our school always took a handful of 11th graders. I didn’t get the sense that there were tons of applicants but I do know that they wanted to be sure they’d hit the ground running because academics are tough that year and they are important to college apps.
I think they are also interested in the reason for the application at that point.
Generally the case at Thacher, between 0 - 3 kids admitted into 11th. None are ever admitted into 12th to the best of my knowledge. An 11th grade admittance is tough. A kid has to be, by the judgment of the admission’s team, endowed with exceptional maturity, social engagement skills, academic ability, and give everyone the confidence that he or she can integrate effortlessly and immediately into an existing, tight-knit class. No small task.
Why not consider a two-year boarding program that is designed specifically for junior and senior years (or senior year plus a post-grad year) like United World Colleges (UWC)?
UWC attracts high performing kids from all over the world and places them at UWC-affiliated boarding schools across all continents. They follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Kids are chosen by their own country’s host committee.
