Other schools: Accepted: UCLA, UC Berk, USC, UCSD, UMiami, All the UG of the BSMD schools. Rejected: Columbia, Stanford, Duke. Waitlisted: Rice

Decision: VCU Gmed Program!

Reflection: I was going back and forth between Drexel/Drexel and VCU and after considering every little factor and countless research on forums and websites etc. I decided VCU was my best choice :] I think a big factor in admissions is dedication to the extracurriculars that I chose. I didn’t have ALOT of EC’s, but the ones I did have I did continuously. I played a really big interest in the sciences through Science Olympiad which I’ve been doing since 7th grade. Best of luck to all future applicants!

I’m assuming you are OOS for Stony Brook. At what point in the process were you rejected? Many of these programs say they consider OOS students, but in reality, they don’t.

@Tropix status was ACCEPTED

So I guess CalTech is harder to get into than Stanford.

I don’t think so, he was probably just an outlier.

Caltech likes their scores closer to perfect.

Which would be an non-holistic admissions process. Anyways, I got into every BS/MD that I applied to, which seems to be rare. But then again I was protected by Texas residency.

SAT: M:700 W:590 CR:710 (2000)
SAT 2: Math 1:730 Math 2:680
ACT:
Composite: 31
E: 32 M:34 R:29 S:30 W:8/12

I shadowed a doctor, did some research, played on the band…etc.

BS/MD Programs (only applied to one):
Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education ---->interviewed ----> accepted

Undergrad Schools:
Stony Brook —> accepted
Harvard —> rejected
Columbia —> waitlisted
Princeton —> rejected
Yale ----> rejected
Brown —> accepted
Dartmouth ----> accepted
Wesleyan ----> accepted
Binghamton ----> accepted
NYU ----> accepted

Decision: Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education (7 years)

Reflection: In retrospect, I should not have just applied to Sophie Davis; I should have applied to more BS/MD programs but I guess one is all you need. I think that my essays and the STUNNING recommendation I got from the doctor that I shadowed really made me stand out. My interviews were great. I may not have had the best stats but I think my writing and the recommendations that I gave in made me stand out. Unrelated side note… I wish I applied to UPenn

@CUbound are you under affirmative action? And why’d you wish you applied to UPenn?

@sanguine my reasons for that are very complicated.
I’m an African American female if that is what you really wanted to ask.

@CUboundscholar You didn’t apply to Stony Brook’s Scholars for Medicine Program? Why did you only apply to one BS/MD, you have a 1410? I think sanguinee is surprised you got into Dartmouth and Brown with a 1410, not about your race…

a bit late to the game… but
committed to GWU 7 year BA/MD program :)

They keep on sending me emails encouraging me to go to their program… I think a lot of people turned them down his year. Did you get in originally or off the waitlist?

I got in originally … how do you know that a lot of people turned them down?

Because the stated deadline to respond of April 12th passed but they were still sending me emails asking me to come after that date.

@CUbound yeah that’s what I meant. Thanks for clarifying @TheBombingRange

Class Rank: School does not rank
Unweighted GPA 3.95/4.00
Weighted GPA 4.78/5.00

SAT:
Total - 2350/2400 (single sitting)
M - 800/800
CR - 790/800
W - 760/800

ACT: N/A

SAT II:
Math 2: 800
Chemistry: 800
US History: 800

AP classes: I’m in an IB diploma program but I’ve self-studied for several APs (I received all 5’s on the eight AP tests I’ve taken)

Major Extracurriculars: leadership positions in the following: science outreach non-profit (one of my biggest activities), Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, Med Careers Club, French Honor Society, Science Club, and Chem Club (I pretty much lead all of the science extracurricular activities at my high school); lots of doctor shadowing (120 hours)

Community Service: around 800 hours (recycling program, hospital, nursing home, etc)

Research Experience: no biomedical research positions. I interned for a computer scientist the summer before junior year.

Applied to the following BS/MD programs:

Case Western PPSP → Rejected

URochester REMS → Rejected

Northwestern HPME → Interviewed → Rejected

Rice/Baylor MSP→ Interviewed → Accepted

Other schools:
University of Pittsburgh- Accepted w/ full merit tuition scholarship
Vanderbilt University- Accepted w/ full merit tuition scholarship
Yale- Accepted (SCEA)
Harvard- Rejected

Decision: Yale Class of 2017!

Reflection: I think one of the main reasons I was rejected from Case Western and URochester’s eight year medical programs was that I had zero relevant research experience. I’ve heard that Northwestern and Rice/Baylor evaluate applications more holistically, so that’s probably why I was given the opportunity to interview at those schools.

It came down to Yale versus Rice/Baylor for me. Although I could list a million reasons why Rice/Baylor made sense (cheapest private medical school in the country, located in the world’s largest medical center, care for the underserved track, minimal stress undergraduate experience, top 20 undergrad/top 20 medical school combination) I couldn’t bring myself to commit. I realized that the only reason why I wanted to go to Rice/Baylor was for the medical school portion. Rice is an amazing school, but it just didn’t feel right to me. On the other hand, I had a blast at my Yale visit. I met so many amazing future classmates and sat in on some awesome classes. I felt at home at Yale. Based on my personality, I know I would’ve pushed myself to my full potential at Rice/Baylor (regardless of the guarantee), and if I committed I would’ve spent the rest of my undergraduate years at Rice wondering how my life would be different at Yale.

Some advice for future applicants: If you are stuck between schools, don’t forget to reach out to the resources around you (teachers, parents, classmates). I flip-flopped between Rice/Baylor and Yale for the last couple of weeks. My head told me Rice/Baylor but my heart told me Yale. It was only after talking to one of my teachers (whom I have a lot of respect for) that I realized that I am too young to choose a medical school or know for sure that I want to spend the rest of my life working as a physician.

The ‘guaranteed MD degree in 7/8 years’ tagline may be appealing, but remember that it’s not always about the end result but the journey there.

Good luck to all future applicants! :slight_smile: (and congrats to everyone on this thread!)

REMS was not research focused, I also haven’t done any research but I got an interview… Congrats though!
