BU 7 year med vs. TCNJ/Rutgers-UMDNJ 7 year med

Hi,

I got into BU 7 year med program and TCNJ/Rutgers-UMNDJ 7 yr program.
I'm leanig toward BU for its med school prestige, but I'm still having a hard time deciding between these programs..

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Did you get into BU/BU or BU/UMDNJ. They have both tracks.

make sure to take money into consideration. did u get scholarships at either TCNJ or BU? are u in state for UMNDJ?

I live in NJ, and I got into BU/BU program.
I’d pay a lot less for the UMDNJ program, but for now, I’m trying not to take money into consideration in deciding where I wanna attend.

What do you guys think?

Hands down BU/BU. In Boston, a research MECCA ESP. with Harvard and Tufts medical schools and hospitals (both with extensive research facilities) to die for: Brigham and Women’s, Mass General, Beth Israel, Children’s, as well as NEMC.

UMDNJ - Yeah, um not even close.

Also isn’t BU’s first 2 years strict Pass/Fail if I’m not mistaken (or is it just first year)

Congratulations!!!

So the question is, what is the difference between these colleges if your aspiration is medical?

Are there any comparisons of each college, for their pre-med/BA/MD programs?

UM
BU
Drexel
UF
USF

Are there any comparisons of Honors College programs?

I have not been able to find anything comparing honors college programs, nor any comparing BA/MD programs, nor any comparing Pre-med programs.

We visited UM yesterday and we were impressed with the program there. They have started something called “PRISM” which their best students in the sciences, as well as their 7 yr medical students, will participate in by invitation.

The campus there is beautiful, the dorms were not bad, not great, but better than state school dorms, and security was good.

Its an expensive school, but they are giving her significant scholarship for 4 years. So its possible to do it.

Any opinions? Should we even go see Boston U if she did not receive scholarship from them, even though they put her in honors?

IS UM a great BA?MD medical program?

Thanks for all of your opinions.

Bump…

Regarding research opportunities - It’s not as though you get to select between UMDNJ research faculty vs Harvard faculty, OK?

If you choose UMDNJ, you could still pursue research with faculty from Columbia or NYU or Rutgers or Princeton, or UMDNJ. It just requires some networking and ground work…same as it would at HMS.

From what I recall, BU does not collaborate with Harvard. It does, however collaborate with Tufts. So, you can potentially do research projects very easily in collaboration with Tufts from BU.

Harvard collaborates with primarily MIT. MIT kids do get to pursue research very easily with HMS faculty. Therefore, to secure a research position at Harvard, you would have to top other competitors from Harvard and MIT.

Secondly, if you are really interested in pursuing research, your ‘research interest’ should matter way more than ‘where’ you pursue it. I say that because I have seen one too many kids go to “top notch labs” and conduct incredibly menial tasks, often get mistreated by doctoral or postdoctoral colleagues, and feel somewhat dejected with the research experience. If research really interests you, it might make a profound difference to find a Researcher who will actually allow you the opportunity to go beyond the basic low rung-chores and actually mentor you. The likelihood of achieving this often greater in a place not as competitive as HMS.

Thirdly -If you have been accepted by UMDNJ/Rutgers or UMDNJ/TCNJ - You automatically get a full tuition ride + $2000 for a Semester abroad. Yes.You have to fill up the paperwork, of course! But your tuition is paid for. UMDNJ cost of med school is ~ $23,000/year for 4 yrs of tution+fees.

BU cost of education - When I compared this in 2007, I recall was about $38-40,000/year for undergrad alone. BU med school today as OOS is around $40,000/year I think. But fast forward to 3 years from today, it’s likely to be ~$40-45,000/year for OOS.

At BU, clearly you would pay much more total cost than at UMDNJ/Rutgers or TCNJ.
I do agree, however, that Boston is way way better town than Newark. Heck! If I had the money, I would love a second home there. 8-)

So, if you got money, go for BU. Otherwise, stay around your own home state.

One other thought. I also recall reading some publications about BU’s serious ‘grade deflation’ problems. Do check BU threads for most recent information… also check their archives. My info is 2 yrs old.

If this problem is still continuing, maintaining the required GPA and Science grades to stay within the SMEDS program may be another factor you want to consider.
