Regarding research opportunities - It’s not as though you get to select between UMDNJ research faculty vs Harvard faculty, OK?

If you choose UMDNJ, you could still pursue research with faculty from Columbia or NYU or Rutgers or Princeton, or UMDNJ. It just requires some networking and ground work…same as it would at HMS.

From what I recall, BU does not collaborate with Harvard. It does, however collaborate with Tufts. So, you can potentially do research projects very easily in collaboration with Tufts from BU.

Harvard collaborates with primarily MIT. MIT kids do get to pursue research very easily with HMS faculty. Therefore, to secure a research position at Harvard, you would have to top other competitors from Harvard and MIT.

Secondly, if you are really interested in pursuing research, your ‘research interest’ should matter way more than ‘where’ you pursue it. I say that because I have seen one too many kids go to “top notch labs” and conduct incredibly menial tasks, often get mistreated by doctoral or postdoctoral colleagues, and feel somewhat dejected with the research experience. If research really interests you, it might make a profound difference to find a Researcher who will actually allow you the opportunity to go beyond the basic low rung-chores and actually mentor you. The likelihood of achieving this often greater in a place not as competitive as HMS.

Thirdly -If you have been accepted by UMDNJ/Rutgers or UMDNJ/TCNJ - You automatically get a full tuition ride + $2000 for a Semester abroad. Yes.You have to fill up the paperwork, of course! But your tuition is paid for. UMDNJ cost of med school is ~ $23,000/year for 4 yrs of tution+fees.

BU cost of education - When I compared this in 2007, I recall was about $38-40,000/year for undergrad alone. BU med school today as OOS is around $40,000/year I think. But fast forward to 3 years from today, it’s likely to be ~$40-45,000/year for OOS.

At BU, clearly you would pay much more total cost than at UMDNJ/Rutgers or TCNJ.
I do agree, however, that Boston is way way better town than Newark. Heck! If I had the money, I would love a second home there. 8-)

So, if you got money, go for BU. Otherwise, stay around your own home state.
