Hey, I’m a HS senior currently applying as an undergrad, and I’m torn between selecting a major in the School of Management or a broader Communications major. Any advice as to which program is better/more respectable?

Also, if I apply to SMG, do I fill out any extra info for the Honors Program or am I automatically considered for it? Can I be in both the SMG Honors Program and the UHC? Please help!

I guess it depends what you want to do with the degree? The majors in COM are pretty different from the ones in SMG and usually lead to different careers. The one exception I can see is COM’s Mass Comm/Advertising BS major can lead to similar careers as a Marketing major’s from SMG.

BU’s COM school is very highly regarded and is well respected in the nation. But, SMG is a pretty good program too. SMG certainly has a much better building.

I suggest you look on each program’s respective site and look at the curriculum to see which classes interest you more and base your decision off that.

As for your second question, I have no idea. I’m just a prospective student for BU as well.

You’re always able to switch colleges if you decide that, once you get here, you want to change your majors. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other…but each will lead you in a different direction. You can also minor in SMG or COM if you like or even double major. There are many routes to take. What kind of things are you weighing the schools on? Reputation alone? Academics? Usefulness to a potential career? Creative job? There are a lot of things to consider!

I also don’t know how the honors applications work so it might be best to just call admissions to find out.
