BU RISE 2017 (Boston University RISE summer program)

I made a group https:// www. facebook. com /groups /204665630031091/
just type it out without the spaces and add yourselves

i got into RISE for an internship in organic chemistry! my stats:
unweighted gpa: 4.00
weighted gpa: 4.41
current courseload (ap + post-ap): apush, artificial intelligence, web dev, multivariable calc/linear algebra, ap spanish lang, organic chemistry, ap physics c (mechanics, e&m)
sat: 1570 (21 on essay)
previous experience: my school has a summer curriculum where they teach the entire honors chemistry course in five weeks; i took that course myself before sophomore year, and i worked in it as a TA this past summer. in my application, i emphasized that i found my passion for chemistry through these experiences, and being able to take an actual course in organic chemistry this year furthered my interest in chemical research

i agree that personal statements were probably the biggest factor they took into consideration - they probably want to see that not only does an applicant have relevant experience, but also they know exactly what they want to be able to do if accepted into the program. i wrote specifically about having experience working with instrumental analysis and wanting to be able to take the skills i learned further, so i believe that helped a lot

congrats to those who made it! i read through the thread and was somewhat surprised at the resumes of people BU turned down, because i don’t have previous internship experience and had to bank on my schoolwork and relevant experiences. i’m sure everybody will do great in the future though, and looking forward to meeting some of you this summer!

I got another email about matching professors. Now they say they’re working with a specific mentor and will update me soon, as long as I respond to affirm my interest. I really hope I get in!!

Accepted into Internship track! Doing neuroscience!!!

But I wont go unless i dont get in my top choice summer program

FINALLY got into the Intership track for biology, a month after their first mentor email. Can’t wait to meet all of you!

I just got accepted into Biochemistry for Internship

Feel so happy!

Was such a long wait though… it’s been 6 weeks almost.

Does anybody know how good the program is? Because it conflicts with the Link Crew system at my school which I am also part of and I have to choose between one of the two.

Thanks

@dragojeff BU RISE accepted 60 interns and 40 practicum students for this summer. Not sure how many applied. Sounds fairly competitive. Anyone going from SoCal wanna fly out together?

Hey guys! Does anyone know what kind of research Practicum students participate in? On the website, it says that Practicum students aren’t part of the poster symposium and do oral presentations instead, which indicates to me that Practicum research is less useful/interesting (otherwise I’d assume we’d make a poster or write a paper instead of delivering a presentation). Plus a lot of the techniques they talk about (gel electrophoresis, computer analysis of proteins, etc) I’ve already covered/done in class. seems more like an ap bio course than a research program…

@dragonTD on the facebook group it looks like a lot of people are from socal! maybe you’ll find someone there?

@guacisextra Practicum focused in molecular biology

my son was just accepted in BU Rise program in the Department of Chemistry. We were curious if someone who has attended this program could give their feedback. Is paying $8000 to do a 6-week research worth it?

Thanks in advance!

I was accepted into the RISE Internship track and I plan on entering research competitions. I’ve tried to email my mentor to learn more about what I will be doing over the summer, but he has not responded. Any advice?

Hey guys I just saw this lol and im pretty sure im the only one from Wisconsin going lol… anyways im doing the practicum and here are some of my stats:

SAT 1530 (16 essay)
PSAT 1410
GPA 4.522 weighted and 3.957 unweighted
Chemistry SAT II: 770

Sophomore year I took APUSH and AP Microecon, then over the summer I took AP Chemistry at Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development

Junior year I took AP Lang, AP Seminar (highly recommend if your school offers, it is a relatively new course), AP Physics 1, Honors Pre-Calc BC (basically we do half the AP BC curriculum, we stopped at Particle Motion) and AP Government

Next year I am taking AP Lit, AP Biology, AP French and AP Calc BC

I wrote my personal statement on how my love of research stemmed from my experience in Northwestern’s laboratories while I was taking AP Chem and taking AP Seminar (a research intensive course) as well as how watching the movie Lucy (highly recommend) made me think about how much we still don’t know about the world and how this program will help me and other participants advance science into the future.

So yah that’s me lol I’m really excited to see you guys in less than a month (!!!) I just requested the facebook page so you can contact me through there

Their website says about 550 people apply each year
