And no, I didn’t apply for financial aid
@doglover12 very sorry to hear…with your specs, very surprised u didn’t get in…best of luck for the coming summer…I’m sure u will find something special w/ ur background
@hani1120 which Practicum track r u planning on?..I got into RISE as well but waiting on others that also release in April/May…just paid deposit in case
Was accepted into the internship track for mechanical engineering on the 22nd! good luck to all!
@dragonTD I thought there’s only one Practicum track, which is about biomolecular topics?
@hani1120 sorry I should’ve used the word “field”…I did some lab work in cancer research last summer so I’m hoping to pursue a career in this direction after college
@dragonTD I want to go into medical field in the future, probably biomedical engineering or medical school
A question for any of you who already sent them the deposit money, how long did it take for them to receive it? I mailed the check last Monday and it’s already been a week, they still haven’t replied back
just email them rise@bu.edu
they respond right away and are very friendly
@dragonTD I already asked them last Friday and they said no. I’m just so anxious about the check rn Did they get yours?
My D has been accepted in 2017 BU Rise Internship program. However, she also has been offered similar (research area wise) internship positions from Stanford Medicine and UCSF when she directly contacted Professors with her research summary she performed last Summer in one UC campus. She is a rising senior from Bay Area.
I am wondering what are pros and cons joining BU Rise Internship over Stanford or UCSF. Both Stanford and UCSF are free (no tuition) and she can commute from home as Stanford is only 10 miles away. But for BU, we need to pay for tuition and dorm. Any feedback will be appreciated.
@BayAreaParent1 hi! i was in the same boat as you last year-i had an internship lined up already at UCSC and was accepted to the BU internship track. Personally, I chose to decline my BU acceptance, partly for financial reasons (coming from CA, the tuition is not cheap), and the flexibility i had from having an internship locally. Another thing to consider is the cost of senior year college applications-I spent ~$1000 sending out all my apps and test scores, so i did not want to burden my parents for an experience I could have easily had at home.
The pros for BU are that it provides a structured system and you get to be in boston for the summer, however I was pretty sure i wanted to stay west for college, and i also felt that i could also do things on weekends that allowed me to reminisce before senior year began. in addition, i really got to know my PI this summer and he gave me more networking opportunities to get into labs my senior year, which was very helpful since i plan on going into science.
i am sure both opportunities will be great, but i would recommend you stay with your internship in stanford/ucsf-whichever option you choose will have negligible experience on your college apps.
hope that helped-let me know how it goes!
i would say go with the free internship! @BayAreaParent1 my older brother went to bu rise a few years back (from socal) and while it was fun, he says he would much rather prefer having a local internship because he could do scientific research there for the long run and he liked having connections to labs he could easily access. he now attends mit!
Thanks @crimsonbleeding2022 and @ktan55 for your feedback.
I just got accepted today to the internship track for chemistry. My stats are as follows:
Unweighted GPA: 4.33 out of 4.33 (The school has A+ system)
Weighted GPA: 4.75
Course Load: AP Calculus AB and BC (in one year ), AP Chemistry, AP English Language, AP U.S. History, and a programming class (intro level)
ACT: 34 but super scored 35
Previous research: I have done 3 years of independent research in chemistry all on my own and competed at science fairs both regionally and at the state level. I have won an award from the ACS for outstanding research in Chemistry.
Reading through this thread has been kind of surprising to me because there are some highly qualified people who got rejected. It might be that the personal statements are weighed very heavily. In my personal statement I talked a lot about my previous research and how RISE would allow me to pursue that research with a mentor which is immensely helpful.
hey guys!! for the people who got accepted, we should make a facebook group so we can sorta get to know each other before meeting each other for the first time!!
k lol can someone make it @adelynnzeng @CalcGod @probablyneedhelp @riyatriya @lanpace @boss49494 @Miko20425 @marssupport @hani1120
@justdooit I am going to a different program, have fun everyone!
i got into the internship track today for mechanical engineering! For those of you who got update letters, it took ~3 weeks for RISE to locate a match for me. Best of luck to everyone!
Got into the practicum track a couple weeks ago!! I was really hoping for an internship position but I’m sure either would’ve had a positive impact on me and I still get the opportunity to do some research. it just feels so good to have my worth validated lol
