BU RISE Program 2019

^^same, got moved into matching 3/13, still not matched. glad to know others are in the same boat

how good is bu rise and what can you expect to get out of it? do most students end up with publications or projects that do well at regional/national science competitions?

I just got matched with a medical professor on Tuesday! not anyone that I put down in my application but still exciting. now I have to choose between this and u Chicago ribs, any thoughts?

@itselto congrats! So they are still actively matchingā€¦ I donā€™t know anything about RIBS, but if your 1st choice college is the University of Chicago, that might be preferential. Otherwise, I think BU RISE is respected at most schools. Which way are you leaning? When do you have to let BU know by?

@testtest123123 since this thread seems to be all applicants & applicantā€™s parents, not BU RISE alumni, Iā€™m not sure how much we can help with specifics of research outcomes. Maybe you should post on the main summer program board to ask. Like any summer program, RISE may not be long enough to produce a publication or project that does well at regional/national science competitions. I think you have to go into the program for the experience, rather than the expectation you will come out winning a national science competition. What are your other options (where else did you get in?)

@curiousme2 I decided on UC Davis YSP since it is a very similar program and will be a lot cheaper for me. Best wishes to all of you at RISE!

Congratulations, UCD YSP sounds like the right choice @pollute. Iā€™m curious, what was BUā€™s response when you turned down the match?

Iā€™m not @pollute but I also ended up turning them down and they just said ā€œThank you for letting us know. We hope you have a wonderful summer!ā€ But my response might be different because I was still in the matching phase and I think pollute had already matched.

My son got matched this morning. good luck to all of you!

@johndoe11235 sorry it took me so long to reply!! basically they first asked me to tell them a little bit abt myself and why i was interested in my topic/research area, and then they asked me a couple of questions specifically related to their lab (ex. what was an aspect of the lab that i was specifically interested in?, what were my expectations for what my experience there would be like?, etc.). there were some logistical questions after that just to make sure that i could actually participate in the research going on at the lab, like how many hours i could work every week.

i think it went okay, but iā€™m super nervousā€¦ @curiousme2 i havenā€™t heard back yet; they said they would get back to me in around two weeks, so iā€™m going to wait a little longer before reaching out to them. iā€™m certainly no expert on this and i canā€™t say that iā€™m even remotely decent at interviews, but what definitely helped me the most was visiting the labā€™s website beforehand and reading up on their projects. i really really hope i made a good impression because i like the lab a lot and iā€™m really interested in the research that theyā€™re conducting.

@highschooldad1 Congrats! what field did he apply for?

@melon24 Chemistry

Anything new from anybody?

nope, still unmatchedā€¦ sigh. staying hopeful though bc no facebook group has been made yet, while in past years, usually it wouldā€™ve already been made, so maybe that means that not many people have been fully accepted yet?

@melon24 Yeah, Iā€™d say that logic makes sense haha. I emailed them yesterday night to see if they had any updates on the matching phase, so Iā€™ll see what they say.

They said ā€œThank you for reaching out. Since youā€™ve least heard from us, we have been working to match you with a mentor. We are currently waiting to hear back from the prospective mentors weā€™ve contacted. Admissions decisions will be made by the end of April and we will shortly contact you. Thank you for your patience and for working with us during this process. ā€

@curiousme2 I decided on Boston. Itā€™s a lot cheaper and I contacted the professor to see what I would be doing, and he replied with a lot of interesting information that sounded more advanced that uchicago. Iā€™m still kind of sad on passing on Chicago because Iā€™ve heard so many great things about it (and thereā€™s the chance to work in one of their labs next year if I attend this year) but also super excited to head to BU this summer!

Sounds like youā€™re in for a great summer, @itselto ! And U Chicago was even more expensive than RISE? ouch.

Not matched here yet.

I just got an email asking if I would be comfortable brining a laptop to BU if matched. Anybody else?

@succ55 nope, thatā€™s probably a good sign though! maybe a professor is interested in hosting you and wants to know if you have a laptop

yay i heard back after my interview and i got matched!! good luck to anyone still waiting for news
