I am looking to do a Finance major at either of these schools as a transfer student.
NU and BU are within 2 minutes of each other in Boston.

Disregarding rankings, answer the following based on reputation, prestige, and employer preference:
Which is the better school for undergraduate Business?
I know its a very close call.

Both great schools, both right in the city, and a pretty big rivalry has cultivated as of late. I would opt with Northeastern especially for business. The coop program is unbelievable and I heard grade deflation at BU is a myth but not sure. Anyways I think you will have more opportunities at NEU.

NEU business seems to be slightly favored over BU business, at least from what I’ve seen. Business co-ops can be really incredible (or less so, if you aren’t a good job candidate) and I have some business friends with VERY impressive job prospects, even in this economy. But BU is also a good school with a solid reputation.

Being the two big urban Boston schools (BC & Tufts are smaller, Harvard & MIT are just in a different league), there’s a bit of a BU/NEU rivalry. Especially now that NEU is just as selective as BU, we’re not the safety school alternative anymore. There’s a lot of bias around these forms from both sides, a lot of “NEU isn’t a good school and it’s in the ghetto” or “BU’s campus is ugly and spread out and the people there are snobs”. So just keep that in mind when people are giving you their opinions…

Yea, im leaning towards NEU now. Internships are big for me. I’m one of those ‘go-getters’ and my current school’s career placement dept sucks.

If I transfer into NEU my junior year, will I be able to do Co-ops immediately? I read on their site that “students typically begin co-ops during the spring of their sophomore year”. I don’t want to be really far behind everyone else…

You’ll have to do a semester of classes first, and then you can co-op. Plenty of students don’t go on co-op until 3rd year, so you wouldn’t be “behind”. The only catch is that you wouldn’t have time to do 3 co-ops… just 2. There are lots of posts about the logistics of co-op over on the NEU board that you might want to look into. :)

First, I’m a NU alum and I majored in Finance so I’m biased.

BU is a fine school. If I wanted to major in music, communications, elementary education, performing arts or history or was quite undecided about what I want to do I would suggest going to BU. Each school has their strengths. If someone wants to major in business, pharmacy, engineering, nursing, criminal justice, I’d tell them NU.

B-school is more than terrific facilities and faculty (which NU has). It’s also the students in the classroom with you. And those students armed with co-op assignments that are real jobs bring those experiences and perspectives back to class with them. This enriches the whole experience as well as being a huge hiring plus for employers. Many NU kids are hired by their co-op employers and never even have to hunt for a job senior year. It is also SO great to already know the real deal about a company and (more importantly) the group of people in your department. Others are just glad to have an offer in hand and then look for an even better offer.

But you don’t really have to take my word for it. ;)

Wow, why am I not surprised you’re looking at BU, Mr. BMWdude. You’ll fit right in with your pretentious attitude and expensive car. I will warn you, though, there are tons of kids with 6 and 7 Series, so I would try not to act like a snob.
