I got accepted to the school of management, as well as the honors program with a really great financial aid package at BU. But I also got accepted to William and Mary with a not as great financial aid package but still a pretty good one. I already had to accept the fact that, although I got accepted, I can’t go to NYU Stern because their financial aid was typical of NYU and there was no way we could afford it. So now I’m doing my best to pick a school and I’m coming up with nothing. I’m having tons of trouble deciding between the two so any input would be very very much appreciated!!! Thanks :-)

go william and mary, better all around college feel in terms of BU. BU kinda is social elite in a way (dont bash me, its just my opinion) but William and Mary just had the college atmosphere to it.

Would you rather live in a big city? Then BU. The management school is fabulous. Funny, I’ve heard the same things said about W&M (preppy, social elite) that afitscher says about BU.

I’m always curious when a new poster shows up and it seems you’re going to Emory and live in Buffalo so what the heck are you doing posting - and negatively - about a school you know very little, if anything about? What value is drive-by posting?

To the question at hand, so you want to study business? The schools in general are very different in approach. BU’s SMG has a specific philosophy of teaching - it’s discussed in other threads but read the website and you’ll see. This is, I would say, more modern than traditional business school thinking - and potentially has more of a technology emphasis. I don’t know squat about William & Mary’s business program except that, by its own description, it’s a traditional business curriculum. I have no idea what appeals to you but that should be a factor in your decision. (I realize that kids tend to apply based on books and known programs, but the actual websites do convey a lot about what the program offers.)

As to the schools, you know where BU is and you should know where W&M is so that’s your other choice. No one can answer that for you. You a city person? (At least in this comparison, both locations have lots of tourists. :))

And then you look at the money and figure out if going to school in Williamsburg with that feel is worth the extra money or not or however you want to phrase the question.

I don’t know much about W&M but I’m assuming that it’s different than BU in terms of campus life. So like what everyone else said, it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you think you’re a city/urban person, than BU. Being in the city of Boston also results in a lot more opportunities for internships, etc., so you might want to take that into consideration.

I’m currently a sophomore in SMG and in the honors program and think it’s a great program. They don’t try and separate the honors kids from the other students (which I think is great) except for this honors business stat course you have to take your sophomore year. You also get to take an international seminar trip after your freshmen year (Dublin, Ireland the last two years) and you get to take honors seminars on some pretty interesting topics. I’m taking a seminar on Privacy Law right now. If you have any q’s, pm me.

thanks very much everyone! I’m really just trying to get an outside perspective and I really appreciate the opinions :-)

Have you visited both? If not, and if its possible for you, go to both of the schools and try to get a tour the School of Management. You will get a better feel for the programs and the overall atmosphere at each school. Also, it will help you find out what you really want in a school… you can only learn so much from researching them and other peoples perspectives!
