Buissiness school vs regular school selection

I want to apply to colleges for a finance degree. But I know that there are like different “schools” for buissness majors. Such as Wharton for upenn. Or haas for berkely. Is it more difficult to get into the buissness school by putting finance for my major than putting undecided because of how prestigious the buissness school is specifically?

For those colleges where you have to apply by school, yes it can be harder to get into the business school than say the general schools of arts and science, sometimes a little, sometimes significantly so. At a number of colleges (but not all), it is also difficult to internally transfer into the business schools, so strategically trying to get in via freshman application to another school may not be successful either. Haas does not allow all majors to enter as freshman but by competitive internal transfer too so you’d need to investigate that further in terms of the specifics you are interested in studying.

For Penn, you can apply directly to the business major for frosh admission. Changing into the business major if you start elsewhere at Penn requires a competitive admission process.

For UCB, only a few super-competitive programs (some combined with other majors) offer admission to the business major as frosh. Most frosh seeking to study business start in some other division (usually L&S undeclared) and apply for competitive admission to the business major in their second year.

Other universities may have other policies on the matter.
