I am an incoming freshman to SAS this fall. Could someone give me some insight into the Rutgers Bunting Cobb residence hall?

1) How easy is it to make friends as a freshman?
2) What is the general atmosphere like? Are people friendly or are doors always closed?
3) How are the dorms compared to BAMM in Busch?
4) Since I am going to be a biology major, will it be difficult to get from Douglass to the other campuses (especially Busch)?

I don’t think it is difficult to get from Douglass to Busch, but of course it is much easier to get to Busch if you actually live on Busch, right?

Is Bunting Cobb all women? You may prefer that atmosphere over the mixed floors at BAMM.

In general, I think that most dorms are similar in that you are all new freshmen with the same anxieties. It should be easy to make friends whichever dorm you choose. So decide on location and if you want to be in a coed dorm or not.

Hi! I lived in BC this past year, and will be continuing living here next semester as well. Deciding to live in BC was the best decision I’ve ever made besides deciding to come to Rutgers. I met my best friends and had an amazing time. However, my floor was a little weird because it’s usually known as a quiet study-oriented dorm. However, you will be housed on an all or mostly freshman floor and you will be surrounded by people who will be taking the same classes as you (since it’s a STEM dorm and you guys can all suffer through classes together haha). Like I said, my floor was a little unusual this year and we all had our doors open, but if you bring a really friendly environment to the floor, people will open up too. Go from door to door the first day and just say hi. Then later, ask if anyone would like to attend the first football game with you. I’m also a biology major and I had zero classes on busch my freshman year. Cook/douglass surprisingly holds a lot of science classes. The only time I ever traveled to Busch was for the football games haha it can be difficult to get to Busch on the weekends or in bad weather, but I wouldn’t worry about it. If you have ANY questions at all, feel free to message me! I would LOVE to help you out! Go DRC WBC girls!!! Woo!!!

Hi Marbiovet, my daughter will be an incoming freshman, she has applied for BC and hopes to get in. Is it on a first come, first served basis depending how early one applied? How do they assign students to BC? I am keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Hi Hopeful820! I don’t think she should have a problem getting into BC because I don’t believe it to be super competitive. I don’t know if it’s first come first serve because there is an essay in the application. If she gives a relatively good reason as to why she wants to live here (the resources like tutoring and mentorship, the study-oriented environment, the community of STEM majors, etc.), she should get in. There are 3 floors in BC. The third and most of the second floor are dedicated to freshman. The first floor is dedicated to upperclassmen. Each floor has 20 rooms I think? So she’s “competing” for one spot of 70ish (because the rooms are doubles), which aren’t horrible odds because many DRC freshmen go to Katzenbach and most engineers go to Barr (also, there’s a new environmental science “house” on the third floor of Woodbury; to clarify, the dorm is one building called Woodbury-Bunting Cobb, but one side is the Woodbury side and the other side is the Bunting-Cobb side). Douglass and Rutgers loves women in STEM, so they’re going to try to accommodate STEM women to the best of their abilities. As much as I have said that she shouldn’t have a problem getting in, I can’t guarantee that she will get into BC (as I have also noticed there are more girls interested in Douglass this year than last year). Wherever she ends up, Douglass is an all around fantastic community willing to help with any troubles and provide amazing resources (such as Project SUPER). Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you for the info, marbiovet. She wants the extra resources that can help her. I have asked in another thread about room temperature at Rugter’s dorm, is it ultra hot in the winter time? At my son’s college, they wore T-shirt and shorts in winter because it was so very hot in the dorm room. Try to figure out if she would need heavy bedding stuff. Thanks again.
