Is there only one freshman dorm on the Busch campus? They put all the first years together no matter what, right? I would really like to end up with people my age, going through the same things I am going through rather than upperclassmen roomies.

Yeah...I'm pretty sure that they put all the freshman together...

I don't live on campus but I'm always on Busch and have a lot of [freshman] friends who live on campus. Busch has 4 all frosh dorms, dubbed BAMM. Barr, Allen, Metzger, and Mattia. They are all next to each other. Barr is the all engineering dorm. The dorms on Busch are A LOT better then the dorms on College Ave. and Livingston. The quads and towers are just nasty. The College Ave. kids always rave about the nightlife but the rooms are smaller than the Busch ones and don't have AC or carpet.

Is housing on Busch campus guaranteed? Would they ever push you out after you've already applied for housing? I know there was a situation a while ago that they didn't have enough room to house everyone, so people who lived close to the campus were not allowed to dorm, instead forced to commute. How common is that?

Also, which would you say is the best of the four freshman dorms?

Ok here is the deal. Science_please is right in that the Busch dorms are MUCH nicer. It's really no comparison with college ave. BUT..and this is a big but...You are not gonna have fun on Busch. If you are a hip person who likes to have fun, Busch is not really where you want to be. Personally, if i don't get into Penn, good chance I'll end up at Rutgers cause I'd get a full ride, and I will be doing engineering. Everyone who applies to engineering lives on Busch and I have been strongly adviced by my sister and all her friends (all of which went to rutgers) that I do not want to live on Busch. So I'm applying undecided and swtiching to engineering so I can live on College Ave. My sister and her friends are really reasonable and logical people. If it wasn't that big of a deal they'd tell me so. They were really serious about telling me not to live on Busch.

Wow...that is the first time I've ever heard that. Granted, I figured it would be a bit more serious because of all the engineering/pharm students there, but I didn't think the social life was that horrible...now I'm reconsidering. Can anyone confirm, please???

Sorry to post again...but I was wondering if Busch has regular activities like swimming pools, tennis courts, etc as all the other campuses do...where can I go to find out more information about student life? I've tried rutgers.edu but could not find as much info as I would like...

lishnik21 is correct about the partying and stuff on Busch compared to College Ave. College Ave. is right by Easton Ave.(New Brunswick) and the frat houses. Engineer's who choose Rutgers College as their college of affiliation can live on College Ave. You don't have to apply as undecided. A couple of my engineering friends are living on College Ave...and their grades suck...lol. College Ave. dorms fill quickly so get those apps in early if you want a room.

stargirlx - Nightlife on Busch? lol. There really isn't any real nightlife on Busch, mostly people who get together with their friends to have a good time on their own. I've heard that the honors students in the McCormick Suites party the hardest on Busch, go figure. I love Busch though, I don't have time to party or get drunk and even if I did I probrably still wouldn't.

As for recreation, Busch is definitely where it is at. Sonny Werblin is the nicest rec center on all of the New Brunswick campuses. Pools, racquetball, basketball, volleyball, weight room, it has pretty much everything. There's also a tennis bubble, not in Werblin but not too far. The only thing about the gyms on campus, almost exclusively with the basketball courts, is that they are pretty crowded most of the time. If you want to play basketball but you aren't that good, it could get pretty intimidating. I play down there as often as possible and it gets intense. Here's a link to Rutgers rec. facilities:

Any other questions? I'm answering so many, especially on this Rutgers board, because no one really answered any for me last year and I was confused about a lot of things.

I'm not really one for getting drunk and partying, although it would be nice to be able to once in a while just to see what college parties are all about. :) I don't plan AT ALL to be getting drunk every weekend. I want to be able to party if I feel like it (*but then I can probably just visit another campus for the night, right?) But I also don't want to be living in a seriously geeky, studious dorm either. I would rather it be like what you said: "mostly people who get together with their friends to have a good time on their own". Not sitting around watching all my roommates study 24/7. So which would you say is right for me?

Is housing in Busch freshman dorms guaranteed? What is the difference between the 4 BAMM complexes in terms of social life, convenience, etc?

Thank you so much, science_please. You've been a great help. What year are you?

science how do you "choose rutgers college as your college of affiliation" as you said...do you apply to rutgers college with a amjor in engineering?..or do you put rutgers college as your second choice to the engineering school??

I'm a freshman, class of 09, school of engineering(BME).

I don't think there's any actual difference between the 4 dorms. Barr is the all engineering dorm so you can only get a room in there if you are an engineer. All of the BAMM dorms are right next to each other, Metzger is right across the street from Barr, Allen, and Mattia. The social life is about the same for the 4 dorms I would say. They all are filled with different types of people with different interests. You will find the partiers and the bookworms in all of the dorms. It's a big school, you will find your niche, your spot, and your group of friends. I'm still in my first semester and as a commuter it is harder to find friends. Quite frankly, I wouldn't want to be friends with a lot of the kids I have class with, lol, a lot of them are weird(which is good). I dunno, maybe I'm just not a normal engineering student. I think it's because I come from a really really different school with about 5 Asian kids and I step foot onto Busch and its totally different and I'm not used to it yet. I'm Asian, btw.

One thing you should know, if you're lazy or just don't like walking, BAMM is far from the closest bus stop compated to the distance between the College Ave. and Livingston frosh dorms to the nearest bus stop. It's like a 5 minute walk vs. a 2 minute walk. Doesn't seem like much but in heavy rain, cold wind, and snow later on in the year, it doesn't sound like fun.

Btw, if you are all set on coming to Rutgers, it's good that you are researching the dorms already. It's still really early in the decision process though so if your situation permits, consider other schools. I'm not saying think about Willy P or TCNJ, if you stay in NJ go to RU. If you can/want to leave the state for a much better school, consider it. I turned down UCSD, UCD, Penn State, McGill, and Toronto. Some of those schools have considerably better programs in my major/interest and sometimes I think about if I made the right choice.

lishnik - On your app, if I remember correctly, you get to pick 3 majors or 3 schools to apply to. If you want to do engineering and like the idea of living on College Ave, apply to the school of engineering and rutgers college. I applied to the SOE as a BME major, RC as a bio, and LIV as a neuro. If/once you enroll into the SOE in the spring, they will send you a bunch of stuff about placement testing and college of affiliation. All SOE students pick a COA because on top of all of your engineering classes(chem, physics, calc, statics) you will need to take some electives(psych, english, econ). I'm not 100% sure about this, maybe you should ask someone at RU but if u pick RC as your COA you get to pick a dorm on College Ave or Busch and maybe even Livingston.

I know that if you are a regular Rutgers College student you can pick a dorm wherever. E-mail/call someone at RU to find out. One thing I really don't like about RU is that they have horrible communication with potential applicants and newly enrolled students about placement testing, registration, and COA choices. Good luck, read everything, respond quickly!

You got me worried about getting my app in. I'm gonna try to get it in within a few days. It's basically done. I just have to do that stupid little personal statement whcih im considering just skipping and I want to make sure I got this whole dorm thing straight. A kid who graduated from my school a couple years ago wrote "I do not want to go to Rutgers" in his personal statement and got in with a full ride. Given he was the val and im not, but my scores are still up there. I still get the full ride, so I dunno if i should even bother with the statement, although ive heard you should do it if your getting into honors.

You don't really have to rush getting your regular app in. Once you enroll and they send you the housing app, you should get that in asap.

How fast do you recommend sending the housing applications in after you receive it? Will they run out of room that fast? Are students guaranteed housing on Busch?

How do you know if you qualify for a scholarship or not?

Can anyone provide information about the best dorms on the College Avenue campus?

And do the dorms have special floors? IE honors floor, substance-free floor, etc? I'm guessing these are probably the boring people? :P

stargirl if you go on their website you can find out about scholarship info..they give you a certain amount of money depending on your SAT score and rank...its a chart...if your instate and you have a 1500+ and your inthe top 5% you get a full ride

Freshman dorms on college ave are pretty much the same. I've been inside Mettler, Tinsley, and Clothier and they all look the same to me. Small, no carpet, no AC. They have elevators(which Busch doesn't have) and a bigger lounge area(with AC).

I haven't heard about honors floors or substance free floors but I know that McCormick suites are for honors kids(on Busch). Honors kids aren't boring, they're unique, I guess, and they party pretty hard.
