Business: Cal Poly VS UC Irvine

Hi all,

I was accepted to Cal Poly for business administration and UC Irvine for business economics. I wanted business administration at UC Irvine, but ended up with my alternate major. I’m having trouble deciding between the two. What are the pros/cons of each and does anyone have experience at either? Please share your experiences.

Thanks so much!

What field are you ultimately interested in?

@GoldenWest most likely accounting/finance.

Well, I am no expert, but my guess is Cal Poly would be better. Having studied accounting myself at a UC,from what I understand of the Cal Poly approach, you are going to get a far better, more practical education with opportunities for internships, etc. Hopefully someone with more recent experience can chime in with information for you. Good luck!

I’d lean towards SLO but, go to both admitted student days and see what you think.

Well, you mainly have to decide if you want Economics more, or the actual business major. Both are great schools, but in the end you wanna be studying what you like the best. I’m currently a business major at Cal Poly, and I’m glad I didn’t dive into Econ at a UC, simply because I’ve found out that I’m not a huge fan of it.

Check out both schools and see which atmosphere you like better!

Cal Poly is a top school for accounting with designated recruiting priority from the Big 4. Also on Bloom’s top business school list.

en3mes is correct. Cal Poly is a designated recruiting campus for the Big 4 accounting firms. See links for verified evidence:

If I were an undergrad candidate for UCI, before I enrolled I would want to know exactly what my prospects for an accounting related job would be at graduation. I scoured the UCI web site for links similar to the above including searching company names. I saw that many alumni (mostly MBA’s) were actively working for firms like KPMG, Deloitte and E&Y but I could find no information related to on campus undergrad recruitment. I gave up after 30 minutes and suggest that you call the school to see who recruits accounting undergrads on campus. Also, the undergrad Business Admin degree at UCI is very new with only couple years of history. The first class of undergrads to complete the program has not even graduated yet. Therefore, although it has a well established regional MBA program, the undergrad program has not proven itself yet.

There are two ways to approach this. You may want to go to a more established program with a proven track record and that choice would be Cal Poly. Or you may want to get in on the ground floor of a new program and that choice would be UCI. Either way, I would lean towards Cal Poly.
