I am very interested in pursuing a degree in Business with focus on Economics. I really want to go to either UC Berkeley Haas or NYU Stern.

I have two questions: is it easier to get into Haas or Stern, and what is the acceptance rate for both? I cannot find any information on this.

Can someone also please tell me which one is "better" when it comes to community (such as friends - are people in Stern really "stern"? My GC told me this is true, and she found that out when she visited Stern in the summer)?

In any case, both are great schools, and both are very selective. I can’t imagine a difference of more than 5-6% in their acceptance rates so don’t choose which to apply to based on that. In fact, apply to both.

Are you instate for Cal? If you are, I’d go there instead. Much much much cheaper than NYU, which is also by the way, very stingy with aid.

I suggest not thinking about this now. You’re still a junior and have not taken the SATs yet. Your SAT score could very well determine the types of schools you should be looking at.

Where do you want to live after college. NYU would be better for east coast, and likely Haas is better for west coast in terms of recognition, alumni network etc.
I don’t think (but you must check) that you can be directly admitted into Haas - I think you have to apply after a year or two at Berkeley. If you are not assured of being admitted into the business school that is a big deal in my mind.
What type of campus life do you want. Berkeley has a campus while NYU is in Greenwich Village. You’d have to visit the schools and see what you like.
At many colleges economics is not in the business school, but rather in the liberal arts school (and some schools have it in both). So if you plan to be an economics major be sure to understand what economics is and which school to apply to. Being an economics major in a liberal arts school is different than being a finance or accounting major in a business school.
And I agree, it is too early to narrow your decision down to two schools. Take the standardized tests and see where you fall. There are a lot of great choices out there.

You won’t be able to apply to Haas until sophomore year at Berkeley. Haas is a two-year upper division program. Admission is competitive. You can apply to Berkeley as a freshman “undecided - pre-business major”.

Thanks all, you are all so helpful! I have a lot of family on the west coast and absolutely none on the east coast so the west coast is definitely my first choice.
